Young Cape Buffalo is good. All the Walleye is great. In fact I never met a fish i didn't like, as long as I am caring for them from the catch to the skillet. Pheasant is another favorite having been raised in SD.

Vapodog,
Really....I didn't know that Walleye HAD cheeks. Do they have lips, too ?

Red Allison, when I shoot chickens with the .30-06 even the lips are missing. There's usually just a little red mist on a snow colored background left.

[blockquote]quote:
That is when I saw my trusted 30-06 fail,oh it killed the elk,but it took 4 shots(3 in the heart-lungs and 1 in the neck to finish it),all of them were well placed shots, when gutting the cow she had 3 sluggs up against the ribbs on the far side, yes the 30-06 worked but the shot was only 40 yds.Now if a 30-06 can't punch trough at 40 yds what would it do at 200 or 300.[/blockquote]
I didn't read every answer, but i sure got a kick out of this quote!! hahahaa
Another classic case of NOT useing a "bullet" to do the job that YOU wanted done, then blameing the cartridge!!!
Happens all the time,
Drilling Man
PS, the "exact" same bullet at an even HIGHER velocity (read magnum) = an even "bigger" falure to penentrate deep!!! (assumeing a std. expanding bullet was used)

I also found your responce to this guy about penetration funny as well. And you are absolutely right. There is a common misconception that higher velocity magnums equal deeper penetration when in fact: (Higher velocity mags = higher velocity bullet impacts on game) (Higher velocity impacts = more rapid bullet expansion) (Rapid bullet expansion = rapid decelleration due to the hugely increased frontal area of the bullet) (Rapid decelleration = less penetration)

I'll change the subject again. For a couple of years in college I lived on chicken gizzards mixed with stir-fry mix (frozen). The cheapest thing I could find. Gave me more money to buy Jim Bean and Coke to wash it down with.

From Magnumitis to Walleye cheeks and chicken gizzards is a bit of a switch.
. I will change it back. From what I have read here it sounds like Magnum fans have more problems with people who don't use them than the other way around. Many Non Magnum cartridges have plenty of power and flat trajectory to make them as good of performers as their magnum big brothers. An animal hit with a 30 caliber bullet going along at 2700-2800 FPS really gives up very little to the same bullet going 2900-3100 fps. On paper the difference is easy to see but in the field on big game, the difference matters little. Big bears and such can be taken with the 300 RUM, the same beasts have been taken with the 30-40 Krag and the 30-30 and 35 Remington. Therefore the choice is up to the hunter. If the cartridge is legal for the game being hunted and has been proven over many years to be effective then use it. I catch as much crap over recommending the so called sissy cartridges as the magnum fans do for choosing there weapon. The 30-06 with 180-250 grain bullets has taken every species of big game on earth. That does not mean its the perfect gun for everything but iit will dispatch of a Cape buffalo in short order and will do the same to an elk or moose. The SD and BC of a good 30 caliber bullet makes it a good choice for a wide variety of big game regardless of which class of rifle that its fired from. That with velocity from 2000 FPS in the case of the 30-40 Krag, to nearly twice that speed from the 30-378 Weatherby, Within the range of each, the results will be the same. Its up to the hunter to do his part and no weapon makes a man a hunter. To the guy who wants the extra velocity, many companies build magnum rifles. For those who prefer less blast and recoil but still wants to hunt the big game, the calibers like the 45-70, 270-280, 308, and 30-06 will do the job if the hunter does his job. I have seen the old 30-40 Krag with its 220 grain bullet chugging along at 2000-2100 fps take moose and bears and even much bigger game.
Take your pick and remember that the bullet still has to hit the right spot or all else matters not one bit.
