Using a 150 gr. Nosler Partition, or 150 gr. Barnes-XLC-HP factory loads I would max. out at 300 yds. Good luck.

If I were you I would shoot the gun until you are comfortable with it and decide for yourself but I would definetely use a heavier bullet, when shooting it. A .270 will kill an elk but you need to use a heavier bullet and you have to accurate with it.

BTW a .270 is far from a "pop gun".
It's all relative.

Ifones main "go to" rifle is a 270Win, thenone sure doesn't want to think of it as a "pop gun".

If you use a wide range of rifles and cartridges from small to large and have hunting experience with all of them, then for big game, IMHO many folks will see the .270Win starting to"fall" towards "pop gun" status rather quickly compared to some of the other larger, more powerful stuff, which by the way I have never found difficult to shoot.

Either we are the world's largest nation of whimps or the "recoil" thing is way overstated.

I shoot magnums as well and have not found them dificult to shoot one bit either and I am about to buy that 338 Ultra mag but I still stand 100% behind my statements that a .270 win is a very capeable elk rifle and would have absolutely no reservation shooting at the largest bull elk at 300 yards or so.

Basically if a .270 wouldn't have killed it then it is very unlikely that an ultra mag would have done any better. Yes a 375, or 416 will shoot through its butt to the lungs but I aint taking that shot no matter what gun I am toting around in the mountains. Some people like to take the "Texas heart shot" but I don't and won't.

BTW, about how many times a year does this topic come up around here?[8D][8D][8D][8D][8D] You would think that the entire worlds population would have read about this by now.

I, too, own a wide variety of rifles. Having taken elk with everything from a 6MM to a .458, I find the .270 to be about a good balance ofsporting, but not reckless. The 6MM requires surgical precision in terms of bullet placement, and even then is often a "wait a bit" until they realize they are dead. The longest shot I have ever made on an elk was with this caliber, however; and it was a humane one-shotkill.

The .300 and .338 Magnums give you a bigger margin for error in terms of shot placement - granted - but the .270 with good bullets and good shot placement is a very reliable elk killer - even at at400 yards. OK - I admit it -I read a lot of Jack O'Conners stuff when I was a kid. . . And my .270 is an Ackley Improved with a 26" Shilen barrel.

When I used a 270 win for bigger game (moose and elk) my personal limitation was 250 yards positive vital shot max. Of course as important is picking the right bullet for the task in the first place. With a solid constructed bullet such as: TBBC, Failsafe, NP, Barnes, etc. If you know your abilities and more so can maintain them in the heat of the moment the 270win is capable to handle elk without question.

I however wouldn't suggest a max range to another hunterthat I have no clue what abilities they possess..sorry you'll have to figure that part out on your own! Just be realistic/honest with yourself& you'll be alright.
