RE: 270 elk range???
I'm not a fan of using the 270 win on elk,but it has worked for many, many hunters.
Now with that being said,I would use a quality bullet and take shots no farther than 250 yds on a good mature elk.Thats farther than most pepole can efectively shoot, past that you run to much chance of hiting the shoulder bone, and that will flat put a stop on a 270 win. BBJ |
RE: 270 elk range???
Using oneof the new bonded bullets with ballistic tips, I would comfortable with engaging an elk out to 400 yards. Closer would be better, though . . . . .

RE: 270 elk range???
Well,a good .270 will shoot 2 1/2" at that distance from a bench rest. Under field conditions, from a good field rest, I can keep them in a grapefruit. In my world, this is a high percentage shot. And let's not regress to this ongoing "you need a .378 Wby to kill an elk" discussion. You do only ifa hit anywhere on the elk is a "thumbs up".

RE: 270 elk range???
According to Lyman's Optimum Game Weight chart, the farthest recommended distance for a 150 grain 270 Win on an elk size animal is 160 yards.

RE: 270 elk range???
270Win. - Elk - range? I'd pick a good bullet such as a Trophy Bonded, Nosler Part., or Rem. Core-Lokt Ultras, 150gr. minimum weight (160gr. Nosler would be better), and then I'd hold my shots to no more than 200yards.

RE: 270 elk range???
Its worked very well for me out to 250 yards. I seldom if ever shoot much past that anyway. I like the 280 a bit better but you will do well out to 250 yards if you can hit where you need to. Same as any other gun including the Magnums. The key is always placing the bullet in the vitals or pass that shot up until you can. Again this would be with the 270 or a 340 Weatherby Mag.

RE: 270 elk range???
Those optimum game weight charts are crap IMHO. If we all went by those then we would need a 300 magnum as a minimum to hunt deer in America.
It also says that a 450 Marlin loaded with 350 grain bullets at 2100 fps is only good for moose out to 90 yards. And a 444 Marlin is only good to 20 yards. And then the 35 Whelen is only good to 50 yards for moose and 200 yards for elk. A 30-06 isn't even capeable of killing a moose according to the chart. Heck the first "moose gun" capeable of killing a moose beyond 300 yards is the 338 Ultra mag.[:'(][&:][:'(][&:][:'(][&:] Assuming one would use a correctly constructed bullet for hunting elk with the .270 and they can put a bullet where it needs to go then a 300+ yard shot is certainly within the capabilities of the cartridge. Elk are not going around wearing body armor you know. I don't care how big the gun is, if you can't hit what you are aiming at then a 378 Wby. mag. aint gonna help you none. BTW a .270 is far from a "pop gun".[&:] |
