RE: $2000 to spend, but which rifle???
I am suprised nobody mentioned a weatherby accumark, seems like it would fit his needs perfectly. Also as Ridge Runner said there are many custom gun makers who will make you a synthetic tackdriver for under 2000 bucks. I do not remember who it was but somebody said how much would you have to spend to make a remington shoot like a sako. Personally i own 4 remington rifles and only one of them will not shoot sub MOA 5 shot groups at a hundred yards with factory ammo.

RE: $2000 to spend, but which rifle???
Hey guys, sorry its taken me so long to respond... Very busy weekend. Anyway, I went to the local gun shop and "tried on a few". My observations as far as the out-of-the-box high end rifles: Loved the Sako, and it solidified its place among the top of the list thus far. I also handled a Weatherby MarkV and it took a solid #2. Both rifles shouldered great with the Sako action seeming to be a bit smoother than the Weatherby. The Sako 75 Stainless I looked at was marked $1125 (good price???). I'm also still considering going custom but am having a hard time making it come out under $2000. See if my math seems correct.
approx $450 remington 700 stainless apporx $500-$600 Pac-nor fitted to action approx $250 blueprint action $642 McMillan stock installed (glass and pillar beded by McMillan) $849 Swarovski AV 3-10x42 Total: $2791 See anywhere I can trim some fat?? Heres another option I'm condsidering: $1125 Sako 75 Stainless $642 McMillan stock installed $599 Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x50mm Total: $2366 On a side note does anyone know if Sakos come bedded and or free floated?? |
RE: $2000 to spend, but which rifle???
Sako barrels are totally free-floating and you can trim $642 off by using the Sakos stock. If you want more info on the Sako check the link. www.sako.fi

Go with the Sako. I've got an older 691 with a 4.5X14 Leupold Vari X III and if that rifle will shoot a .25" 3 shot group center to center. I don't know if Berretta has kept up the quality since they took over, but I can only assume they have.

RE: $2000 to spend, but which rifle???
You could save some money by free-floating and bedding your own factory stock. If you're going with a 700, go with the Varmit model. Even the trigger can be easily turned down and smooth with the factory components. If you're shots are not going to be over 300-350 yards, then why make a rifle that would shoot a 1000 yard shot? Just by doing a few mods yourself, you will get a nail-driver out to 500 easy. That would trim down the cost, well under 2K, and save the money for accessories, or an upgrade to a scope that has a little more power than 3-10X. That's what I would do. Good luck!

RE: $2000 to spend, but which rifle???
big country, you obviously don't know kirby But none of them, I mean none can ever meet a challenge. One of the 1000 yard benchrest light gun records right now is with a I think 6" 10 shots at 1000 yards with 300RUM. His 1" group would blow that out of the water. Its kinda like a fortune teller. You want to ask them, if they know the future, why are you hear capitalizing, why not play the lottery. Same I would ask to the these "best", if they can repeatibly hit sub .1MOA why not go out and make all kinds of money benchrest shooting. |
