RE: .243 vs. 30-30
I think either one would do the job but if had to pick between the two it would be the 30-30. Little bigger caliber for bigger game like bear is always good.
Now in our house we would use either a 250 Savage, 270 or a 25-38 whick is a .40 to .41 calibor rifle.
Personally, I use a .243 rifle for deer and use nothing but balistic tips due to the fact it is fast more acurrate and drops em' better.

RE: .243 vs. 30-30
I have hunted with a 243 for years I have taken wild hog boars in excess of 300 lbs with a well placed shot . In my opinion if a 243 will take out a big hog it will take out a black bear that being said I still would go with the 30/30 its just a safer bet on a dangerous animal I would also shoot the heaviest ammo available. But if you realy want an all around gun look at a 30/06 or a 308 with these two you can load up for large game or down for smaller game.

Actually he's not. There not to much meat you need to fly a bullet through on a 'youte plus you don't want to ruin the pelt with 2 big .308 sized holes. Where as a bear you need at least 90% of the bullet to survive it's travel through the animal. So it's easier for a bullet to do just that at slower velocities and when it's bigger. Reading up on terminal ballistics may be in order eh' zrexpilot?

LOL ! I never been told that here on this board. Most of the time I'm told to quit reading ballistics.
.243 vs 30-30
Hmmmm. .243 shoots a lot faster, a lot flatter, a lot farther, has more energy, retains 90% of it bullet weight, mushroom to almost 50% its normal size (.45 diameter) hasa better coefficiency, has a better sectional density. Hmmmmn.....no contest
.243 is better for deer , bear, elk, moose, bobcat, jaguar, coyote, wood chuck, ground hog, squirrel, crows, axis deer, fallow deer, black buck, antelope, mountain lion, big horn sheep,( takes a breath) seals, goats, pigs, javelina, rabbit, fox, or anything I have forgot.

You forgot to mention that you just rattled off what is one mans opinion.. I would remove everything bigger than coyotes from the list. Just one more mans opinion.
