Too many variables to give a definite answer....Species pursued, water depth, stream or lake, etc...
GENERALLY, in shallow, non-moving water such as a lake or pond, I'd prefer a bobber...
In deeper water( below 8-10 feet) or in faster moving streams, I'd prefer NOT to use a bobber..
However I can think of several exceptions to both rules...
Bait fishing for stream trout....Worms or minnows..??...

Red Worms.
I use to catch my own night crawlers.That is almost as much fun as fishing itself. We raise rabbits so we have the red worms..I like them better and so do our panfish.

Brown trout....
Night crawlers........
I've caught plenty of smaller browns on minnows and redworms, but I've never caught BIG brown trout in numbers until I learned how to properly fish crawlers....
For walleyes in rivers....Jig/minnow or stickbait..??..

For walleye in a river if im in a boat, jig and minnow, if im off shore or hip-waders ill be using a stick-bait
As for black or white crappies ill go Black.
