Im at Cabelas looking for a good reel and rod. But I see there are a couple different reels and rods. Spinners, Casters, Spincasters, and Trolling rods and reels. Can you explain what the different purposes are for, Please? Thanks.

I will give ya the basics.
A spin rod is your all around rod. this is all I use and i sugest starting with this.
Trolling rods are for just that trolling (pulled with the boat) I dont think this is what you are looking for.
The casters you talked about are what you see bass guys using. They reels are fast, meaning the retreve line fast. In my opinion they are all to big, the fish just gets pulled in no fight. Bas guys catch 6lb bass on theses rigs I would use them on 40lb salmon.
My sugestion is get a 7ft mediun action spining rod with a good reel to match. This will set you up for anything from small trout to decent sized salmon, walleye, pike, and bass

For a one rodder.Great advice. When I was a poor college student I had one rig like that.I caught more hawgs altogether than I have with my expensive rods. I used live bait,6" rubber worms {black and blue} and good ole Rooster tail spinners. I put a lot of fish on the table.

Spinning Reel on a 6.6 medium action rod is a great set up for Skipping lures under docks, trees, overhangs etc... Can't do that with a baitcaster, or least I've never seen it done effectively.

Heres what I use.
7' Kistler Helium medium spinning rod with a Shimano Stradic 2500 spinning reel. 10 lb test. Weightless plastics.
5 or 6 baitcasting rods with lines ranging from 12 lb (cranking baits, to 30 lbs (flipping)
6' Kistler medium heavy spinning rod with a Shimano Stradic 2500 spinning reel, 30 lb power pro for skipping.

When I was in college and poor as a church mouse I had a Diawa reel with graphite bearings and a 2 piece 6' med.action rod.I lost count of all the bass over 5 lbs.I caught a ton of panfish. Now that I'm a teacher I've upgraded a bit. I 've been losing more fish than I used to catch on the cheap stuff. All and all I 've always used Trilene line.10 lb test.Poor or rich Trilene is my line. When I;m flipping I've gone to Fireline but normal fishing....Trilene all the way.
