tofer, like I said, this old gun was passed down to me, but if you want one that looks "old" you can still buy "coach" guns today. Stoeger and some other companies are still making them for "cowboy action" shooting matches. They shouldn't be too hard to find and are not that expensive.

When has Ruger not sold out to the anti gun forces?? I still have my Mk1 pistols. And I want a #1 really bad. Other than those cave ins, screw em.

Under the bed? I have to go the shotgun route with bird shot. A few buckshot on one side and slugs on the other side. (mossberg 590 with speedfeed parked)

I just don't want the risk of a pistol round going through the walls. AND the sound of the action racking on the 12Ga is just what an intruder doesn't want to hear.

Plus what the heck. Easier to hit with a shotgun. Go shoot some stress matches in IDPA etc.... and find out its pretty easy to miss a target across the room with a pistol.( I know, I can shoot pistols well too- but add stress etc.....)

Nothing like using the tactic of giving away any element of suprise you might have.

Easier to hit with a shotgun.
except if you have an injured hand, or need to carry a child to safety.

No children and I doubt both of us will be injured at the same time. Well actually 2 kids. A lab and a mini doberman.
Pistols are hard enough to shoot with both hands. But at least you can shoot them with one hand. The accuracy really suffers but at the ranges in a house, it shouldn't hurt.

Giving away an advantage. To each his own. In my house I'm not going to wait till the intruder is in my bedroom and just shoot. If I hear something break- I want them to hear my shotgun. Then I know its not a friendly and if they continue in I have justification to shoot them(both legal and mental). After all I still have the other 99% of advantage. I know my house in the dark. They dont have a clue. Find me behind my bed before a wad of shot hits you in the chest-- slim to none and I just saw slim on a horse headed out for the weekend. I'm not sure on your train of thought on not giving anything away, but I'd assume you want to identify the intruder to make sure its not a friendly or mistaken somehow. At that point you are also given away if you ask or shout. Plus I don't want to wait till they are into my room, much less through the door frame. Too many bad things happen the closer you and the perp are.

I had a conversation with a retire ATF agent once and he swore the best weapon would be the shotgun over the pistol for the shear sake of aiming ease. Other points to consider...most of which where brought up already.

- Psychological value - that noise of a shell being shucked in a pump carries very far in a dark house
- If it's dark, an unchoked blast of #8 shot has a large zone of damage. So even if your aim is not straight on, you likely hit it if pointed in the general direction.
- Bird shot won't carry through the walls and kill the neighbors.
- Mount a flashlight on it. That way you can blind the sucker too.
- It's easier for the wife to remember how to pump the action and pull the trigger than to handle a semi-auto pistol.
