kimber make a beautifly 22 i would think about it. Uncle matt the 10/ 22 is by no means over rated a basic model can take out gophers at 100 easy. some models are over priced but that gun will last you a life time, and if you get bored with the stocker you can always upgrade parts.

my vote is for the 10/22. i have and old mosburg that will shoot 1.5 inchs at 100 yards i have an older remington pump with the octogon barrel that shoots well under and inch at 50 yards. i have a marlin bolt that won't shoot for shi%. i have a ruger 96 and i like it a lot. i had a chance to shoot and use a 10/22 for about 2 weeks and put around 500 rounds threw it. wow what fun!
however if i could start all over and only own 1 22 for everything i think i would buy a sako, cooper, kimber or a Anschutz. i would rate these 4 as top of the line 22's that will last forever. or you could buy 410/22's instead of one of the others and they would do about the same thing

I have a Ruger 77/22 and I love it. It shoots all ammo very well. The 10/22 is a good gun for the money and it is not junk or over rated. There are countless accessories too.

the .17 is a great cartridge, at least on paper. Question is, at 50 yards or less will it do any more than a good 22 LR or WMR cartridge? Also, you can safely chamber lesser .22 cartridges in a bolt action chambered for the LR (such as short, BB cap, etc). Fat chance you'll do that with a .17. Plus the .17 has a nasty sounding crack to it that alerts anybody within a half mile that something just got shot.

I grew up shooting a Remington Speedmaster and a Browning BL-22. They are both sweet-shooting, accurate guns. I've had my Browning 24 years, shot it last weekend. Still love it. I've killed squirrel-size game at >50 yards with both guns.
They are the best .22's that I know of. I highly recommend both.
Good luck.

Sorry guys I have to disagree. The Ruger 10/22 is the best bang for your buck. The Ruger 77/22's are nice but abit pricey.I have a Remington Model 572 pump and it's been a great little rifle over the years.
