I wouldn't invest much money in a 597 . Especially until you know if it will function properly. The Remington semi auto's didn't get the name "Jam Masters" for nothing.
JMHO.

I'll second that! However if he puts a bull barrel on it, it will make a better paperweight or troutline anchor!

JagMagMan,
You bring up a good point.I never looked at it that way.I knew there had to be some use for a Rem 597 and 710.

lol I have the Remington 597, and love the thing, but from what I hear I musta got the good one outta the bunch. I’ve had thousands of rounds put through it already, and I’ve had the OCATIONAL jam which would be 1-2 times every 100 rounds. However, I have switched to the Rugar 77/22 Mag. cuz I wanted a bolt action, and MORE POWER. I like the long distance!!! But I will say that the 597 from what I have shot is good out to 60yards for squirrels, and that’s just with the LR. But getting off the topic, I LOOOOOOVE my 77/22
good luck

Hoyt14,
I'm glad to hear you've got a good one! They are few, and far between!
Just like you could end up getting a bad Leupold, Ziess, Weatherby, Sako, Winchester, or what ever, I guess you can get a good 597 once in a while too!
The 597's and 710's have been debated here many times. Negatives have outnumbered the positives 20 to 1!
I have a 597, and it jams about once in every magazine loading, and just feels and looks cheap!
To me, when a company starts making duds like the 597 and 710, it is a poor reflection on the whole company product line up, so I personally will never buy another Remington again!

The sites hoyt14 listed are good, should help you.

I to have the 597 in 22 Mag., mine will drive tacks out to 50 yds. My brother and a friend also bought one and they hated them.

The only problem with them that I can find is the clips, they're made out of plastic, I understand that you can now get metal clips.

I bought mine as a low maintenance rifle. I use it squirrel hunting (solid bullets), have killed wild hogs and coyotes with it. I haul it in my trucks and boats, gets a lot of abuse.

Yes I do get an occasional jam and the problem is in the clips. I've worked on the brings inside the clips and no longer have the problem. Hopefully the metal clips are better.
