30-06 vs. 270 WSM

RE: 30-06 vs. 270 WSM
for big game I would take the 30-06 for deer I would take the 270 wsm.
Has anyone ever compared balistic gelatin tests. Theres not much that will out penetrate the 30-06.
I seen my friend shoot a buck with the 270 wsm using fusion ammo, deer was 60 yds away and the bullet exploded on entry, no exit but the deer didnt go far at all. Big ! entry hole.
Most will agree that higher velocity guns tend to under penetrate and bullets tend to explode, the solution, a bonded bullet, well now you have a bullet thats harder and stays together and penetrates, well you right back to square one with a non magnum cartridge. A magnum cartridge in standard bullets penetrate and expand perfect at long ranges, because of the slower velocity way out there at that range, this is where I think magnums shine, long range shooting. Put a hard bullet in a magnum, shoot long range and have the bullet slide between the ribs, what do you get, a pencil size hole.
Under 300 yds, standard calibers using standard bullets, above 300 yds, magnums and standard bullets would be my choice.

but either way, 270WSM or 30.06, you cant really go wrong either way. This is pretty much like splitting hairs. The more important factor on these two is probably which brand you go with instead of which caliber..lol

RE: 30-06 vs. 270 WSM
i like both calibers. i have a .270 WSM and wouldn't trade it for anything. But that has more to do with the way the individual gun shoots, more than the caliber.
The only clear advantages in my mind is the /06's ammo is cheaper and easier to find and the .270 wsm has better downrange ballistics.

I have a 300wsm Browning A bolt classic . Luv it ..
I just ordered a new Browning short Track in 270 wsm .
I just wanted to try a little lighter load .
From what I,ve herd and seen I would have no problem shooting any US big game with either gun .
30/06 is proven over ,But it just seams like yesterdays gun .
My first rifle was a 270 ..

RE: 30-06 vs. 270 WSM
The 30'06 definately has more life in it. There are hundreds of factory loads. For reloaders, there are hundreds of bullet choices from premium to cheap. 30'06 is also a round which many bullets are designed for, meaning you can shoot non-premium bullets with good performance and accuracy. The 300 WSM can also fit in there because it duplicates 300WM performance in a better case.
The issue with the 270 WSM is that the bullets are made for the 270 Win. This causes one to need premium bullets. It is a velocity of the round vs. bullet design velocity issue. Shoot a 130gr 277 bullet at 3300 fps vs the 2900 it was designed for and blammo, it will blow up in your elk. Next, you find yourself which will shoot ok, after you have found a bullet which shoots sub MOA, but blows up!
So, of this group, I would suggest:
1) 300WSM
2) 30'06
3) I'll add 338 federal because for a NA game out to 350 yards, this sounds great!
3) I'll add 308 Win
4) 270 WSM someday they will make 277 WSM bullets
5) 270 Win
