RE: 30-06 vs. 270 WSM
I love the 30 caliber family but personally I would go with the 270wsm out of the two choices. I own an 06 but the 270wsm has alittle edge when you consider long range performance. I like the flattest shooting gun i can fire. I would also recommend the 300wsm. I just bought one 2 years ago and she is now my main squeeze.

I have said the .300 wsm is the new .30-06, a great all around in my opinion.
For elk I like having the option of heavier bullets that the .30cal will allow, ie 180grs, vs. the .270 maxing out at 150grs, 160gr if you handload.
Personally I would get a .300wsm shoot 180grs for everything and call it a day.
I think for an all around I'd stick to either of those .30 calibers, since you didn't mention the .300wsm, my pick would be the .30-06, but if you add it to the mix, then my choice would become .300wsm.

I don't have a lot of experience with a lot of calibers. I have a Win. Model 70 in 270WSM. It's the stealth or shadow model with ablack composite stock. It's a light accurate rifle, especially withhand loads. It's flat shooting and from my experience at 100yds or less will drop a deer in it's tracks with a shot though the vitals. At least with this lighter weight model, it's not particulary fun at the range but I am a lanky guy with not a lot of shoulder. Shooting some lighter charge hand loads could fix that some. I bought mine from Wallmart for 4 something I believe. It was a good caliber, quality gun for a small budget. I have upgraded to a Burris Shortmag 4.5-14 scope and love it.

The world record elk was shot with a 6mm back in the day, nobody here has talked about shot placement and the type of bullet that is being used, as far as a guides are concened they would rather have you bring and shot a gun / cal / that you are comfertable shooting and accurate with than something that your are afraid to shot, SHOT PLACEMENT KILLS,

This debate as to which is better between the '06 and the 270 has been going on for decades. And the 270WSM is very close to the 270 Win.But to keep within the topic of this post and as much as I like my 270 - if you are going to have only one rifle and your choice is between these 2 chamberings, I would have to suggest the'06. The versitility has to go with the '06. There are simply more choices in bullet weights and a bullet in the 165 - 180 gr. will take anything in NA. Although it wouldn't be my first choice for big bears.

Of the 2 mentioned the 06'. However like already mentioned by others I'd also choose the 7mm rem mag over either for this application. I've used .277, .284 & .308 cals(among others) for deer to moose and the 7mm rem mag is one that keeps coming back into my mix for an all arounder. The 300 is a solid all around choice as well.
BTW,I reload, shoot med long range (500 yards) and hunt larger then deer annually. I formedthe aboveopinion based on my experience.
Good luck
