I saw a M44 at Gander Mtn, a gun store in Knoxville, but the M44 had a very weird action, that jams sometimes, and would take alot of practise to get the hang of.
Aren't the actionson the M44 and the 91/30 the same?

I have a 91/30 and an M38. As I understand it, the M38 is pretty much the same as the M44, just without the bayonett. That thing kicks like a scalded mule, so I wouldn't recommend doing much bench shooting with it unless you have winter clothes on or a slip-on recoil pad.

I have no idea if it's true or not, so take it for what it's worth, but I've heard the M44s somehow shoot much better groups with the bayo extended.

Good luck withwhichever Russian you end up with!

Ive shot mine in a tank top before, butt plate on bare skin for 40 or so rounds the recoil never bothered me till the next day. Needless to say it was a little tender. but honestly these mosin nagants really dont kick as hard as somany seem to think. I dont think it kicks any harder than a 308 or 270.

It probably shouldn't, considering the 7.62x54 isn't exactly a magnum cartridge. But we must just have different perceptions of felt recoil, then, because my M-N's kick noticeably harder than my 7 mag. And the recoil pad on my 7 mag is 20 years old or so.
