There not griping about the shots that kill, there talkin about the WHAT IF factor. What if the head moves, what if the deer takes a step. All good points and to that i still say Take shots you are comfortable and confident you can make. Dont just shoot your gun 2-3 times a year and go tryin to get a head/neck shot on animal. It does take a more patience and alot more bullet/gun control.

Please explain how more patience is required in the head or neck area vs the H/L? I will not shoot at an animal standing straight on and if no positive angle is presented for which the lungs are in the projectiles path I simply don't shoot.
I also spend a lot of time on the range each year, asa reloader shooting is fuel for my hobby

Skeet, once again I totally agree! I know that there are big buck contests, and "bragging rights", but even in big buck contests, you get no points for "closest to the eye!"
Hunting is just one-on-one, you against an animal! If you want to "strut-your-stuff," do it against "paper" and "people" on the gun range! "Paper" never suffers for your mistakes, animals do!

My gripe is in regards to the mentality that goes with territory. As you clearlyassumed yet again, that your skill is superior to mine or othersbeing I/we choose to shoot H/L vs head or neck.
"Oh sure maybe it's a risky shot for you guys but I'm so great thatif I take a dump outdoors all the kids in the neighborhood fight over it to see who gets to take it to show and tell at school the next day."
Yeeaaah right! It's a poor shot choice and nothing about my abilities or theirs makes it anything other than a poor shot choice. The fact that some occasionally do it and it goes well means next to nothing. You have a 5in 6 chance ofall going wellin a round of Russian roulette but it's still a risky stupid game to play isn't it?
If you want to "strut-your-stuff," do it against "paper" and "people" on the gun range!

You guys are a joke. You think its all right to kill a coyote for no reason at all. Head shots on rabbitts squirrels or hogsare ok. Are those animals somehow lesser than a deer. Do you think a deer deserves more respect than a coyote or a rabbitt. Puhleeeeeeeease ! You guys are the one with the holyer than thou attitude.
" I respect the deer therfore I only shoot in the body, and you should too." get outa here with that bull$hit.
I laugh at you. You have no clue, and no right to tell me how or when or where to hunt or shoot my game.
I am through with you self proclaimed ethical mongors.
PS next anything I kill will be a head shot and I will toast to it and to you.

If I feelgood with the head shot,I don't hesitate, I squeeze.
I most always go for the vitals but I am not scaredof taking the head shot one bit. I usually give my racks to my uncle who turns them into handles and stuff so busting the skull dont bother me at all either.
The downside to me is the brain/fluid getting on you...I dont like the smell of brains either. Much rather smell the intestines of a lung/heart shot deer, myself.

Can't approach that record, as I've only been hunting for a few years and have only taken eight deer. So far, I'm 6/6 with heart-lung shots and 2/2 with head shots.

I am 40 years old and remember the very first thing I killed, it was a sparrow and that was 34 years ago at the age of 4 with a bb-gun. Two years later I was toting a Daisy pellet gun. I remember the day like it was yesterday, me and my dad picked it up from sears, we were on the way to his lease. I shot my very first small game animal that weekend, a rabbitt, with a head shot of course. I can clearly remeber those first kills but cant remeber everyone after that. I have killed over a 100 medium game animals since that time, most with a .243 and most being neck or head shots. I have never lost or wounded an animal with a rifle.
In my early days I killed them with a .22 Hornet. I been around the block a time or two.
My parents were from the 20's. It was nothing for me to bring small game home from around the house and throw them in the sink, mom would clean anything I brought home and cook some of the best eating wild game I ever had. She could cook like no one else. I have eaten everything.
I know what I am doing but seriously doubt that of others here.
I know I said I was done but this time I am. let this thread die, please.
