Default Will the Williams 336 peep sight fit the model 1894?

In my previous post "Does anybody own an 1894" it was recomended that if I purchase an 1894 that I get a Williams peep sight for my gun if I purchase one. Well I did purchase one and I would love to get a peep sight for it but I want to make sure that the 336 peep sight is going to fit my 1894. Does anybody have the answer to my question?

It may just bolt on and work without any issue, or it may require to tweaking. Anytime you look to use apart/piece designed for a different model, there is a good chance that it will not easily work out. If you can afford it, but it and try it out, and then tweak if necessary. I have some experience putting a peep sight on my Savage 10ML-II and it did not work out like I hoped in the time that I had to make it work. Trial and error will likely solve any problems if they came up.

From what I know there are two sets of mounting holes on the marlins. The difference between the 336 and 1894 is the distance between the two pairs . The distance between the two individual holes in each pair is the same. Since alot ofpeep sights only use one pair of mounting holes you should have no problem if you are using a top mounted sight. However is you are using a side mounted setup like a foolproof then you may have a problem. On the side mounted setups the gun has to be drilled and tapped on the left side . My old 336 has a foolproof on it and it came from the factory drilled and tapped on the side and top. My newer 1894s were not drilled and tapped on the side, only the top. Marlin stopped doing it and you have to send your gun back to them to have it drilled and tapped for side mounted peesights(they will still do it for free).Hope it helps.

Thanks for the replies. It looks as if I will have to send my gun back to Marlin to have it tapped and drilled then to be able to use the Williams peep sight. I will keep looking though.

Before sending it back you should really try one of the top mounted peep sight setups. Williams has WGRS sights which mount on top and should fit and work just as good as the foolproof. some may even work with your current front bead. The only advantage to the foolproofs is that you can get it with turrets so you can adjust windage etc in the field which is really not an advantage for a causal shooter like me.Also you cancheck out XS sight systems whose ghost ring sights fit fine on an 1894. Good for short range work(less than 50 yds). You can still hit at farther ranges but the blade is really too big to give confidenceand a finer front beadwould be better like on the williams setups.Good luck.
Check out brownells or midway to see a whole bunch of possible choices that you may be able to buy for the cost of shipping the gun or just a little more.

Thank you for the reply and advice. I wont be shipping the gun off anytime soon. Heck, with the open sights I can hit a deer at 100 yards pretty easily. I am not in desperate need of a peep atm, it just sounded like a good idea and something that would help to hit deer at a bit further range than the open sights are going to allow for.

Williams and Lyman both make a reciever peep sight, in target and standard model. Both use the existing holes on the flat top of the receiver, that were put there for the scope bases. Call Midway, and they will ship you the right sight, or just order off the net. Tom.
