I love my Marlin 1895M .450 marlin with a 1-4 Leupold Vari X II. Great to carry and quick to shoot. Barks a little bit with the ported 18 1/2" barrel but shoots great. Wouldn't hesitate to shoot over 250 yards with it.

It depends upon what you are doing.
If you are talking about hunting you start to loose energy drastically past 200 yards. For most hunting situations I would use that as my personal maximum range. That does not mean even with the huge loss of energy you can't kill past that range, it just means you have limited your ability to your shot placement and poking a hole it the right place.
Now, particularly with black powder loads the 45/70 has an extremely low standard deviation which means it can be very consistently accurate out to long distances of the 600 - 1000 yard range.
Yes, Billy Dixon killed an Indian at Cheyenne Wells at around 1500 yards but I think Billy would even tell you he was as surprised as anyone that it happened. That shot has been dissected and studied by many and it truly was against the odds. But it did happen.

I realize all you guys can quote drop charts and energy charts, that is easy to do, just pick up a book. The 45-70 is like alot of other good cartridges, it's effective range is not limited by it's capabilities, but rather by your capabilities. The meplat diameter is as large as most modern calibers, and the .458 diameter makes a great big hole that is not easily closed back up, just look up ballistic gelatin impressions, you will be impressed. I have several 45-70's. I have shot alot of game with my 45-70's, it is my favorite. The cartridge is easy to reload for, and it is an easy way to get into bullet casting. Buy the 45-70, and a bunch of ammo, and start shooting. Tom.

I bought my marlin 45/70 guide gun forit's versitility but you gotta use it for what "you" are good at. I'm good under 200 yards with it but when I hunt with it in North Carolina it is in thick brush so I worry about being good with it at that range. If you get the marlin buy the wild west trigger it is awsome I also got the wild west ejector.

Don't take it personally. I've got a couple of 45-70's and like themtoo. Good cartridge. Not amagiccartridge like some folks think, but good. I love to hog hunt and occasionally deer hunt with them.Just not past 100 yards. I use better cartridges forthat.
I've gota 45-70I built years and years ago on a Siamese Mauser action. That thing is so much fun to shoot and I could overload the hell out of the case if I wanted to since the receiver is so strong.
