Maybe you will want to consider/take a look at a Marlin lever gun in .444 or .450 caliber, as you can use the leverrevolution ammo in them, and likely be good to around 250 yards.

I think the new ammo is available for the Marlin 45-70 as well.

If you are good enough a shooter there are several documented and laser ranged one shot kills on bison out to and beyond 1000 yards with the 45-70. Granted these were not with an off the shelf lever gun but the cartridge is certainly up to the task.

As for elk, just like everything else regarding effective ranges,it will depend on how much you are willing to practice and how much time and money you are willing to spend finding the perfect load for your gun. For a factory gun with factory ammo 200 - 300yards is a piece of cake for the cartridge.

I have a 32 in. barrelled buffalo classic it will shoot ok out to 200 yards.I know it will do more but I cant seem to go there with it,just like it at 150 or so yards cause of my shooting abilty. The .450 will not offer any advantage over the 45/70. It is a great round but is nothing more then a hot loaded 45/70. So if you reload you can make some great 200 yard rounds if not try PMC and winchester rounds they are about mid range in power if you want more try buffalo bore, or garrett they will make a believer out of you.

I have that BC too. It makes 200 yard shots pretty easy with the long sight radious and I really like the sights that come on them out to 300 yards. Beyond that its ladder sight time.

Ya James its a fun rifle to shoot. I have shot the buffalo bore 405 grain from it and it is a large boom !!!!!! That long barrel does offer a long sight radius. I wish we could get together and shoot sometime!

On the range, while I'm allowing barrels to cool between strings, I routinely shoot my 24" steel plate at 300 yards with my 1911 just to kill time. Thetop of the bullet's trajectory is about 200 inches above the target. Wow.Yeah with practice it can be done, but I can't think of any practical reason for it. Sure is fun though.
Fordeer or elkpast 100yards I'd choose a modern cartridge over a 45-70. At 300 yards, the average 30-06 load has 1900 ft lbs of energy. The average 45-70 load (modern rifles only) has 950. No brainer.

Hey im not up on this long range shootin with my 45/70 govt.like some of my friends here, but if you want a good deer gun that will blow em down try the 45/70 i love mine its a marlin guide gun small and compact .its a pleasure to hunt with, setin on stand it lays perfect accross your lap,and slung on your shoulder the short barrel never hangs any tree limbs when you walk under them. And i have a safe full of long range bull barrel high priced rifles, but if im going deer huntin in the bottom, are after anything big im toten the 45/70..ITS A BAD MO JO...
