RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

Well no luck yet. I did see 16 deer (1 small buck, 3 fawns and 12 doe). Nothing close enough but I will be back out Friday night thru Monday morning (If I get next Monday off). Just too warm here, highs upper 70's. My son (hoyt14) who is on team 10 did get his doe this morning. His 3rd deer with a bow at 16. I didn't even get to start hunting with a bow until 16 and didn't get my first until I was 21.[:'(]

Jen I know what you mean about spending the day on the computer. I spend way too much time at work on this site. On second thought maybe I don't spend enough time on here. I'm still getting some work done and I could be spending that time on here as well. Guess I will have to work on that. What business are you in? Anything we might be interested in? And yes carbons are the way to go. For sure an alum would have been trash.

DC I have to agree that 90's would have kept me in. That is WAY too warm. We had a tough time with 70's.

KK good luck finding some next weekend. I may have seen some but the results were the same for both of us. Just keep putting in your time and things WILL work out.

Good luck to all.

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

Sorry it has taken me so long to post. I got back from hunting last wednesday and have been working double shifts ever since.

The good news is I bagged a buck. The bad news is the pictures are on my buddy's camera and I am waiting for him to develope the pictures. My buck scored 58 6/8ths by AZ G&F ( a little fork horn). All deer shot in the Kiabab have to be checked out at the AZ G&F station and while i was there, I asked one to score the buck for me. The AZ G&F also asked if they could keep the head, I guess they are doing a study on the Deer's brain to check for some type of disease (I wasn't planning on mounting him so I gave them the head).

As of Sept 14th, only 50 deer had been checked out at the game station (none of them were real big) and there were well over 1000 hunters so I feel pretty blessed (The hunt started Sept 10). I scouted on Sept. 8th and 9th and only saw 5 bucks, all spike and two points so when this little buck presented a broadside shot at 47 yards I took it. I took out both lungs and he travelled only 40 yards or so before he piled up, it was an easy tracking job.

Good luck to the rest of you.

PS...wihunter I don't recall in it is .86 or .83 that my score has to be multiplied by.

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

Way to go PLB.:D As I recall it is .86. I will get an offical number from rob.

There seems to be an issue that started when jbra got a buck here last week. I was gone over the weekend and noticed it today. It is stated (in the rules) that the picture has to have you, the buck, your bow and the tag (if required in your state) all in the picture. This picture will also have to be posted on the official thread in the deer hunting contest. Your story is supposed to be posted in the bow hunting area not the contest area.

I hope everyone can follow this rule for the pictures. It is in the rules and from what I have read today it will be inforced. PLB I pray that you had your bow in the picture with you. Like I said this was brought up last week.

Well PLB congrats on the buck. I look forward to seeing the pictures of him. Tell your buddy to hurry up and get that film developed. It is nice to know we are on the board.:D

The bow, my face, and buck are all in the same picture, but I don't think I put the tag on untill after the pictures/gutting/etc. had taken place. I will get on my buddy about getting the pictures developed for me.

Way to go PLB!!! We're on the board! Don't matter to me that he's not a monster...the important thing is that it's a buck.:) Can't wait to see your pic(s)!!!

I had a fork horn in the backyard this morning. He was looking for the salt lick. He was pawing the ground like mad until a big doe came and then he took off. Guess he was afraid of her...

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

Good Job!!!! Congrats on the buck. Forget the contest, the important thing is you made a heck of a shot on a great animal.

Your 58 pts will come in handy!!!!!

I really believe that if we can add another 350 pts we will have a legitimate shot of an upset. I hope to do my part.

wihunter402 09-21-2004 09:05 AM

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

PLB - Be sure to post that pic in the official score thread with the score. Rob said it is .86 so I would post something like mulie scored 58 6/8 x .86 = 50.53 for the contest. Do that and we should be all set. Hell if everyone could get one like that we would take this thing hands down. Congrats again. I can't wait to see the pics.

Cograts PLB on your Buck!!!!!!! and getting our team on the board. ;) Only 10 more days[:@] My good news is I picked up 3 more spots to hunt. One horse farm that is 25 acres that the owner said has a monster runing around. One spot that is 40 acres that is real nice and has lots of deer sign and 13 acres that has deer thick as ticks on a redbone hound. Im going to try and do some more scouting this week if not I will hunt scout these spots. It looks good and the weather has been nice and cool this past week. I hope it stays this way. GOOD LUCK

10 more days to go here.... and I am ready to hunt!
Yesterday I had two groups of does and fawns pass thru the backyard, and also this little forkhorn. For two days in a row the activity was almost exactly one hour after sunrise. I remember this being the case last year also. You could almost set a watch to it.
Checked the Stealthcam yesterday to find it had taken 12 photos. YIPPEE! I guess it helped to move the darned thing a little closer to the trail. Pics come back tomorrow and I can't wait to see them. I moved the camera to a trail that is at the bottom of the hill at the edge of the field. It is overlooking one of the springs and there are tracks all thru the mud there and also a couple of crabapple trees.

Don't know why the pic didn't show up...you'll have to just follow the link...

Nice pic Jen. Good luck if you go after him. I do feel sorry for you that have to wait so long. It however was so hot here last weekend. This weekend is supposed to be highs near or at 70 so I am looking forward to some better morning and evening hunts. Be sure to post the trail pics when you get them back.

Hey Jen - Looks like you may or my not have to work on our logo. Seems there is a thread at the top this page asking us to limit the size of a team logo. Can you do the editing down for us? Guess I will also have to remove my other logo for the "other" contest. This is my main contest and I am in bow for the other one as well. I may just have to switch back and forth once and a while. I have to guess that the logos are why the boards are running so much slower lately.

Thanks for the help with this. Here is a link to that thread [link]http://forum.hunting.net/asppg/tm.asp?m=769351[/link]

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

WI... I caught the logo message. I guess it's back to the drawing board. AS it stands now I can't get the logo into the size required without modifying it. I will try to fit it in the rectangular size. I'll get it done as soon as I can.

As for the forkhorn... well, if I could I would take him if the opportunity presented itself. However, we are under antler restrictions here - must have at least 4 points or better to one antler. The only exceptions are for kids. I think they should have exceptions for those who have never shot a buck before too!;)

I hear ya on the hot weather. Last year we were miserable with skeeters and its hard to sit still when they are attacking you. Doesn't seem that bad this year. We've been getting nights down to the 40's - even was 38 one morning. Most days have been in the 60's and 70's.

wihunter402 09-23-2004 10:40 AM

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

I'll get it done as soon as I can.
No problem here Jen. I am sure you will do a fine job. I will probably be removing it from my sig shortly. If that is the reason why the boards are going so slow now then I fully understand why they want this. I also forgot about your antler restrictions. I have to agree with you on that. For me we have to earn-a-buck. Last year we "earned" 6 but only shot one. You would think we could carry some of that over to this year.

Well I should let you know I will be going out tomorrow right after work (done at noon on Fridays all year long). I also at this point have Monday off. If the weather stays crappy like it has been here lately (low 80's and sunny) then I will just come to work and save the vacation day for better weather (50's and cloudy). Can you believe that some people I work with here think I am CRAZY. They just don't get it. Anyway I am planning on taking the laptop with me and if I can get dialed in from the cabin I will check in. If not then I will let you all know how it goes on Monday night.

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

Hi Guys!
I have decided that I am removing the logo altogether. I am just going to use the regular typeface to read as follows:

>>>----------->TEAM LUCKY 13<-----------<<<

I can understand how the logos were clogging up the forum. I just had a problem with reducing the logo down to where you coudn't tell what it was. So, there it is...

Good luck WI...and also to the rest of you that are into the season. The days are counting down for me and Hatchet Jack in PA.

Got my StealthCam pics back today. I am posting the three best pics. Only the one small buck showed up for pics. What I found most interesting is that in two of the pics there is a big doe on the top left that is standing in the exact same place the next day. I thought at first the two pics were taken one minute apart but the dates say differently.

Wihunter,

Can you believe that some people I work with here think I am CRAZY
Funny line:D:D. Good luck up at the cabin this week.
Others around the office and fellow classmates think I'm a little crazy to get up early and sit in the woods for hours.
My cousin came home empty handed while on their elk hunt in Colorado. He said the elk were bugling a lot. He said he was tracking a nice bull and had him at 200 yards until someone else took him out[:@]:(. I guess he didn't have his name on it.
I'll be hunting this week-end. Saturday Ron (cousin) and I will be going out. He'll help me pull the monster out with the help of his atv.
Silent hunting,

Well I knew this would happen. I weather has completely gone to crap. We are having mid to upper 70's today and nothing but sun shine. So I came home and am here at work. Might as well save the vacation for better weather. On the bright side I can now shoot at bucks. I got my doe on Saturday night. A nice 1 1/2 year old just like the one my son got a week before. So "Let the games begin". I am still looking to shoot another doe if I get the chance. I have a few stands that all we really see are does and if the wind is wrong for my other stands I will sit there and look for does. Anyway it was fun to put some meat in the freezer. I will have some pictures on my home page [link]http://www.maffet.com[/link] later. Just click on the bow hunting 2004 link.

I would like to wish all of you who finally get to start this weekend the best of luck. There is nothing like that first day back in the woods.

I will be going out next Friday night and Saturday morning but then have to head home. My son and daughter are both going to homecoming this year. I have to be there with the camera for pictures. If the weather should make a turn for the better I may use that vacation time next week. I keep everyone posted.

Hey PLB got those pictures yet?;)

Congratulations on your doe Dave! It's good to know you'll be out there hunting the big boys...

For me, I will take the first decent sized doe that walks my way OR the first 7-point or better buck that gives me a shot. Since I haven't gotten a buck yet I'm not hunting for a bruiser. I will be happy to get what's legal!

On a side note... Neighbor called yesterday and said 4 bears left my property to cross the road. Must have been mom and 3 almost grown cubs. Now I'm wondering if I should purchase a bear license? Do you'll think it's worth it? Our season is only 3 days long. We've been having bears cross the property about once per week now.

Come on Saturday!!!!

Thanks Jen. You posted as I was typing. I got distracted with work.[:@] Good luck to you on taking your first buck. Be happy with whatever you take. This contest is just for fun and I wouldn't want anyone to change the way they hunt for it. As for the bear thing I don't know what to tell you. Is the license much $$? It couldn't hurt to have one but make sure you know where to aim on a bear. I for one would not have any idea what the exact target area would be. I also do not have bears on our property.

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

Here's an update on my past week of hunting. I went a total of 12 hours hunting this weekend and I didn't see a single deer while in the stand. On Sunday morning I got out of the stand at 9:00 after 3 hours of not see anything, I walked up the trail 15 yards and saw a squirrel hopping around. He came rigth up to me 5 feet away. He was just curious I guess. I turned and watched him a while and when I started walking back up the trail 2 doe were 15 yards in front of me!!! A momma and a yearling. I didn't have an arrow nocked so I just watched them until the yearling saw me and ran off.

I went hunting this moring for 4 hours. Clear sky, not much wind, temp of 45 this morning, full moon. I heard a deer while walking to the stand. I heard a deer 15-20 yards from me while arriving at the top of the ladder stand to dark to see anything. I sat for 30 minutes, and saw 4 doe passing behind me at 20 yards. It was still a bit to dark to see my whitted out brass pin sights. about 7:00 I saw 2 doe approaching in front of me. I stood up and readied to shoot. They were 25 yards away so I let them pass. Right after they passed a 7-8 pointer came following in their trail. I was about the same size of rack of my last 2 bucks. The rack up more upright and missing a browtine. He had his nose to the ground. He was around me for a few minutes. He softly grunted a bit. I'd never heard this. He then followed the 2 doe away. My cousin is in St. Louis this week so if i'd taken him I'd still be draggin him out. So an hour passed and a single doe passed 20 yards from me. I took the shot and missed totally. Bad form and everything. that was about 8:00. I had 10 more doe pass within 50 yards of me for a total of 23 deer near me. Only on doe blowed at me and that was when he was down wind of me. I was wanting that doe for some meat but i guess it wasn't ment to be. I still feel there is a lot of hunting left so I don't feel to bad for not taking the buck and missing the doe.
Wow the woods was kicken.
And out of all the deer one was a buck and I only saw 2 yearlings. I'll be practicing more tonight and hitting the trails Saturday again. They're calling for rain, We have had .25 of an inch of rain this September. So we could use it.
I hope that wasn't my last chance at a buck this year, cause then I'd feel a little bad.
Good luck to everyone thats season starts this weekend.
KK

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

Kardkutter, it sounds like you had an exciting morning. It sure makes it worthwhile when you get to see a lot of deer. You say you only saw two yearling... The young ones I have been seeing lately are nearly full-grown. You really have to look to be able to tell the young from the old. It must be that they have gotten plenty of food this year. Tough luck on the miss though... I've been there and I'm sure everyone else has too. I take it to mean that it wasn't meant to be - something better will come along.

Saturday I will be out for sure. It will be cool in the morning, probably about 55 degrees and they are calling for widely scattered showers all day. I don't mind a light rain - it quiets the leaves if I should decide to move about. Doesn't do good for tracking though.

Today I was practicing and I really smacked my forearm - it actually left a welt. On the next couple of shots I noticed a vibration sound. I checked out the bow to find that 're-inforcement' on the bowstring (sorry I don't know technical term) was unraveling. I called the archery shop and the guy said to bring it in. The string 're-inforcement' had to be restrung. So off came the kisser and nock points. He fixed it up and set my points back. At least it wasn't the entire string! When I came home it was too dark to check it out. So, tomorrow I will be doing some extra practice to make sure all my points are where they're supposed to be.

Almost got my doe today - with the truck that is. Two of them came out of a cornfield and went into the woods. The farmer had the corn planted right up to the road. Must have been bedding in the corn (make mental note). ....

Tomorrow I will be washing my clothes with Scent-a-Way and then using the Fresh Earth scent dryer sheets. Any of you guys ever use these - did they work good or bad?

wihunter402 10-01-2004 06:52 AM

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

Sorry to hear about the serving Jen. I have never had that happen but now I am sure I will. As for the dryer sheets I have not used them. I keep seeing them but I just can't get myself to buy them. Mainly because I think my wife would have a fit if I made her dryer smell like dirt. I do use the fresh earth wafers that you can get. I just put all my clothes in a scent free bag (don't use garbage bags as they find their way to the curb):( and then put a wafer in with the clothes. When I pull them out they smell like dirt. It doesn't help with static but I don't worry too much about that. It seems to go away after a little bit. Let me know what you think of the sheets. I am really interested in knowing if the leave the dirt smell in the dryer. If not I guess I will be getting some.

Well good luck to everyone. I am off for a evening and morning hunt in about 4 hours. Then it's head home to get homecoming pictures of the kiddies.

The serving - That's it! Could not remember what that was called.....

WI - Don't waste your money on the dryer sheets! They smelled like real dirt right out of the pack but then upon opening the dryer they didn't smell at all. (Your wife will be happy to know) I could not smell it on my clothes either. But the real test will come when I encounter the deer in the woods.....

The weather report has changed - they're now calling for thundershowers for most of the day. I hope it holds off until at least 10 am. Damn....[:@]

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!!

Well I got one.............. well doe that is..........this morning at 5:50 AM. This was illegal hunting hours, I wasn't in my stand and I didn't even have to pull my bow back!!!! Have you figuired out the riddle yet? The deer just jumped right in front of me while driving to my hunting spot. I got out and looked around and didn't see anything and went on to hunt. While hunting I saw one doe at 50 yards, it was too windy. I ended up going back to where I hit the deer and I found it in a ten foot ditch. It didn't look bad and was still pretty warm. So I called the sheriff and he gave me a permit tag to take it. At least it was free. I took it home and cut it up. I only lost the front right quarter due to bruising. It took me most of the day to skin and quarter it up. Man I'm tired. I got 3 hours of sleep before going to hunt. Thank God I didn't drink anything last night. My bumper on my 94 Dodge Ram is pushed in about 2" not really noticeable. I won't be able to hunt tomorrow[:o] My dad and I are going to ride in a bike ride 50k or 31 miles.
The deer are going to be moving so much the temp is supposed to get down to 35 degrees.

Good luck everyone!!! I think this 13 has made it's point. Bow string breaking, missing a deer at 20 yards, and now hitting a deer with my truck. WOW

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

KardKutter please don't give our team a complex - remember it's LUCKY 13! Look on the bright side - you got some meat for the freezer....

bobd - Congrats on your doe!

Well, for my first day I've come home empty-handed. During the morning hunt I seen six deer - two small bucks, a button buck and some does. The button came within 5 yards of me and I could have shot him but I let him pass. He knew something was wrong...he didn't see me at least. At first light there was a deer blowing way out in the empty field. There's no way that deer was blowing at me! There was no wind early but the one buck and the does were snorting. They were downhill from me so I think that my scent was rolling down the hill towards them. I've never had a problem with scent there in the morning so it must have been due to the weather changing. I'm very unhappy that I was detected so easily after all the de-scenting I went thru... We had a short thunderstorm with heavy rain while I was in for lunch and a nap. For the evening hunt all I seen were some squirrels, chipmunks and a bird that landed two feet in front of my face. Oh, a weird thing this morning. I seen this dark orange cat that at first I thought was a fox - it went crazy running around climbing from tree to tree like it was on drugs and then disappeared. Weird! Overall it was a nice day out and I hope I don't regret passing on the button buck....
