RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Well KardKutter, I've never had a string break but then I've only had my bow for two seasons. It sux that you have to start over on the quick... but this interests me because my string has one strand that has broke. It seems strong enough even so but I am debating on going to have a new string put on. Do you guys think I still have time to do this? And since I never had this done before what might this cost?
I am so anxious about my StealthCam... Yesterday I was worrying because we had the remnants of hurricane Frances spin thru. It was very breezy and raining like mad. I figured the camera would be taking pics of the leaves, weeds & ferns. We shall see. I did see two different turkey hens and one poult when I was looking out the window. It made me think of last year when I seen more deer on rainy days... This time when I placed the trail cam I put it in a very busy area. It is a ravine within the woods, but it is something like a funnel with about a 500 ft. drop. to a spring at the bottom. There is a trail running the length of it and then there are three trails that come together and cross it and become one. I don't hunt this much (except during the gun season) because it tends to channel the air from the field below right up into the woods. You get busted every time because the deer always travel down this hill. Any suggestions on how you would hunt this area? etw... sounds like you had a great time with your grandson. That time with him is important so I hope you can make it special. My grandfather passed away in Feb. this year. :( I didn't spend much time with him during my life but he always made me feel special when I did get to see him. I never got to hunt with him but I can remember some of his tales, especially about hunting for snapping turtles with his bare hands. I am sad that I didn't spend more time with him. Well... back onto more upbeat discussion. I am also wishing everyone luck. NOT THAT WE NEED IT RIGHT???!!! We've got one team member out hunting already which makes me want the season to start now. It's the most wonderful time of the year..... Sorry to ramble....:) JEN |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Sorry to ramble.... IMO you should get that string replaced right away. To me the cost of a string (not sure how much would think about $40) is a lot cheaper then repairs if the bow explodes or worse if you were to get injured. I would think you could get it shooting like it was in just a few days. Just shoot it a lot to get it broken in. I've heard that can be 200-500 shots. Good luck with it. As for the camera I wouldn't worry about getting pictures of leaves. As I understand it they detect motion and HEAT. Otherwise you would get trees moving all the time. Hatchet I have to agree with you about the stoneage. I also don't understand that whole no hunting Sunday thing either.[:'(] I don't think I could live there. |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Well everyone I have some news. I have made an executive decision. I have asked Rob to replace MNRUT. If you look at his profile he joined huntingnet on Aug. 7 and posted 39 times by Aug 12. He did NOT sign in again until Sept 2 when I asked him to check in with the team. He did not check in. He has not responded to 2 email I have sent him since the 2nd. I do not feel he will be checking in with this team during the season. If you look this board has almost 70,000 registered users and only 230 in the contest. Most of that 70,000 never come back.
MNRUT - If you should see this I am sorry but we had to do what was best for the team. You seem to be too busy and I do understand that. This contest is for fun but I feel we need to have an entire 10 (man and woman:D) team to compete. Thank you for understanding and good luck to you this season. I will let the rest of you know who the replacement is once I find out. Rob may even post it on this thread. Thanks guys and gal.:D |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Hey guys, sorry I never got back to check in. I guess I misread the email that was sent to me and didn't realize I had to check in on the board. I've just been really busy as a new semester has started at school and it's proving to be the most difficult thus far. I completely understand that I had to be replaced and just wanted to wish you all the best of luck this season! Maybe things will work out better next season.
|
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
MNRUT - Unbelieveable. I am really sorry about this.:( I have been watching the boards about 10 times a day. Thank you for being understanding about this. Best of luck to you this fall in the woods and classroom. Be sure to log back in and post a pic of your deer this year so I can be sure to feel real bad. I have a feeling that will be the way it goes.
Everyone else, I hope I have better luck with my decision making in the woods. I guess this is why I am not an executive. I have been debating about doing this all week and then 20 minutes after I do it he logs in. Jen - I am sorry we will have to change the logo once we know who the replacement will be. I will email you as soon as I hear. Thanks everyone who helped with my decision. I wish it had worked out better. We'll just have to see how it goes. |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Sounded like he was glad to get out anyway. Don't beat yourself up.
|
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Thanks DC. I just want everyone to have a good time. I know this thing has been a lot of fun already and we still have 230 guys and gals with no deer. I really didn't want to take that away from him. Let's see who Rob gets for us.

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Too bad about MNRut....
No big deal on the logo....I hope! (fingers crossed) Today I visited the local archery shop. I have to say that I am very pleased with the service I got from this guy. He went over everything from the bow to how I shoot. First off I got a new string. He didn't like the broken strand on the old one but he especially did not like the wear around the cams. Found out I'm pulling only 50 lbs.... I had to give up my cheap string silencers as they wouldn't come off. Got a brand new rest, new screws for the quiver, a kisser button, and a few new carbon arrows. I was using aluminum arrows before. I was told that the arrows I was using were too heavy for this bow. So the new arrows are lighter and he said to use lighter field tips and broadheads. I was also told that I was using my release backwards??? After all the adjustments and changes he showed me that the old arrows were flying at about 180 fps and the new ones were 220 fps. Well, I get home and start practicing. The first few groups at 15 yards were a little scattered and then got a little better. I moved back to 20 yards and the first arrow missed the target completely. Here I noticed that the left prong on the rest was a little loose (new rest can be adjusted 4 ways now). I tightened that up and tried again. The groupings got better and better. I decided to call it quits when I got two groupings in a row that were all within 2 - 3 inches. Wow! I am impressed with the change. Before I was consistently shooting to the left and now I am down the middle and grouping better than ever. Tomorrow I will practice a bit at 20 yards then from 25 and 30. I feel much more confident with the bow now and I think this is going to make a big difference in my hunting season. How are you guys making out with your setup and practice? |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Way to go Jen. Sounds like you won't have any excuses this year.:D Always good when you find that quality pro shop. I am also very happy to hear you got that string replaced. I sure would have hated to have you post that you got hurt when it broke.[:o]
As for my setup, where do I start. I went nuts this season. In May I bought the xTec. Then I put on the Trophy Ridge Drop Zone, Trophy Ridge matrix guide series sites and the doinker stabilizer. I then went out and purchased a dozen Gold Tip Pro hunters, a dozen CX 3D Select and a dozen Easton Axis. Since I had all that I picked up an arrow saw, fletching jig and put them together myself. Looks like I will be going with the Gold Tips. Then my sons release (Scott Little goose) had a problem so I gave him mine and picked up the winn free glove. But I didn't get a new quiver this year. I know I went a little over board but I have just been loving shooting this year. I was one that never really shot until the week before the season. Now that my son shoots with me I get out several times a week. By the way he bought him self the xTec after shooting mine. Only problem is he shoots better then me and pulls more weight at 16 years old. Well that's my setup and I love every part of it right now. Guess I don't have any excuses this year either. Next year will be very slim pickings for me. This stuff will have to last for several years. Just don't tell my wife about everything I bought. That would get ugly.[:o] Keep practicing and you should be all set for your opener. For this week I will probably not shoot much since I have everything all sighted in with the broadheads. I will just shoot a couple at the cabin before I go out every day. Good luck. |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Okay Lucky 13, your new team member is bob d......I've sent him an email and a PM to let him know and he should be checking in with you. He said he would be happy to be a member of your team so welcome him aboard and expect him to check in and participate. I don't know how we missed him within the original alternates list....that makes 23 complete teams of 10 members...the season should be interesting....good luck to all of you guys and gal on Team Lucky 13....have a great season.
ps, please amend your logo accordingly. pss, he hails from Illinois |

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Hello bob d! Welcome to Lucky 13! I hope that you have scrolled thru all our messages in order to get to know us. I'm the only gal on the team and probably one of the very few in the entire contest.
We sure have a variety of locations on our team...now including an Illinois...don't they say the bucks are bigger there??? I've updated the logo - it's not as perfect as I would like it to be but I deleted the original file and had to work freehand. Guys, please update your profile to reflect the change. The new file is at the following address: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...N/Lucky13c.jpg Please email or PM me if any of you need help... JEN |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Welcome Bob.:D As you can probably see by reading my posts I have way too much time on my hands. I just can't wait to get this season going. Today my wife and I are going to the cabin to check the trail camera and make sure everything is ready to go for next weekends opener.:D Looks like nobody is giving us any chance to win this contest. I think most of us like it that way. I sure do hope you have a great and exciting season. Good luck.
Jen - Thanks for redoing the logo. It looks great. |

Just one last update. Bob I hope I got your start date correct.
Cottonmouth, Louisiana, Oct. 1 BlkLab, Missouri, Sept. 15 Kardkutter88, Southwest Indiana, Sept. 15 Double Creek, Mississippi, October 1 - January31 ETW, Texas, Oct. 2 Hatchet Jack, Pennsylvania, Oct. 2 Bob d, Illinois, Oct 1 Wihunter402, Wisconsin, Sept. 18 PLB, Arizona, Sept. 10 PAhunterJen, Pennsylvania, Oct. 2 Blklab, Good luck Wednesday. I know what you mean about the heat. We open on Saturday and I am hoping we get some weather like we had in August not like we have had these past 2 weekends. Boy does that sound funny. We has those days in Aug with highs of 60-65 for over a week. NOW we are getting the mid to upper 80's.[:@] Guess we can't control the weather so just hunt. I hope to report back next Monday that I got my doe and can then go after bucks. I wonder how PLB has been doing? |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Whew!!! Spent 12 hours behind my "Craftsman" tiller over the weekend. But, two 1/4 acre plots are ready for seed and fertilizer. Tiller was serviced Aug, 2 but it ran poorly, very "cranky", literally. Set up a another service date, Sept 27 "in the field". Pretty neat service warranty. Just leave it and give em' directions;)
I checked my trail camera, four more photos taken. Lugged 200 lbs of corn to one (55 gal drum) feeder and spiced it up with "Game Kings" vitamin/attractant powder (smells good enough to put on your bannana split). Hauled 120 lbs of corn behind my garden tractor and its little trailer down the power line right of way to my "Tornado" feeder. Sure hope my buck collapses in the right of way, sure would make "dragging" him out a whole lot easier. |

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Well I got my bow back yesterday:):). The new strings brand is winners choice. I haven't researched this brand but I've heard its good. The store that I got my bow worked on has an indoor range out to 50 yards. So I spent 4 hours shooting, boy are my arms tired today. My bow seems so much faster and tighter, I chot it through the chrono and it registered 270fps. I was pretty impressed. I would say I shot over 100 times maybe 150.
The store charged me $40 :Dfor the string and for putting it on with, a kisserbutton, nocks, peep-sight, and 4 o-rings for my release. I think if I would have taken my bow any other store it would have costed my at least $60[:@], just guessing. I am satisfied with the quality and with the workers at the shop. I just hope it stays in business. And with them chargeing those prices well ummmm you know. I don't think I'm ready to hit the woods Thursday, So I think my first hunting day will be Saturday. As long as I get good results from shooting on Thursday. I want to be totally confident on my ability to place a mortal wound on any deer I take a shot at. Happy hunting. KK |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Great KK. Glad to hear you are happy. As for the pro shop just go there when you need things and tell everyone about them. That is the best thing to help them stay in business.
As for waiting until Saturday I agree. It is a long season so don't go out until you are sure of you equipment. Confidence plays a major role in bow hunting IMO. Good luck on Saturday. That will be my first day. I have that dang doe to shoot first so I hope that goes well. |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
KardKutter, I'm glad you are going to get some practice in before you hit the woods. I know I've only got three days practice in since getting my new string and I know I wouldn't feel very confident. Better to be sure that you're going to get a lethal shot in instead of a wounding shot.
My archery shop charged me a grand total of 99.48 for string, kisser, rest, nock points & three carbon arrows. Also included was the two hours he spent putting everything together and showing me pointers. He told me that over the last couple of years he has seen a decline in new hunters. That is sad... Today I am going to check the StealthCam and if all is well I will get pics back in one or two days. I am very curious as to what is out there as I had one of my chickens attacked two days ago (though that may have been a hawk). The black bears go right up the path where my camera is located - hopefully they haven't ripped it apart (fingers crossed)! Check in later..... |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
just checking in. We planted our plots this weekend. half in Max Attract and half in another mix. I am really excited about the season. Come on October 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Hello everyone,
Jen, I just read a post of yours from last year about hitting a deers antlers. Wow does this bring back memories:(not good ones either. Two years ago I was hunting when 3 buck walking in a row snuck up behind me. I heard them coming and the deer stand is next to a big tree so I stood up took a quick peek and saw 3 bucks. I'd say a 12, 10, and 8. The biggest was in front. The deer was 5-7 yards away and I drew back on him. All I could see were antlers (big antlers). I think somthing spooked them and the deer jumped back a few yards. I saw the buck and let the arrow go....... I heard a sound......then I noticed somthing in the air. It was half of my arrow the fletched part. It landed 5 yards in the opposite dirrection I was shooting. There was no limbs in the way of my shot. I climbed down and found half the arrow and the broad head directly below where the deer was standing. So I was down an arrow, broad head, and a big trophey buck. I was so mad[:@][:@]. After this I went to check in how my cousin was doing and he had a nice size doe down. I was so frustrated that I almost didn't congratulate him on the kill. I just put a couple more sight pins on the bow and it is read to go, I'm going to shoot a couple broad heads at 20 and 30 yards and then I might head out tomorrow. It'll be 55 degrees so they might be moving. I shot the bow 50 more times today so I think its broke-in. I'll keep everyone in touch, KK I'm going to post a pitcher of me with a deer this week, Wihunter did this and I think its pretty good idea. |

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Reading all my old posts KardKutter....now you know all my secrets! HA HA! Well, I have all those mistakes under my belt and I am a lot more disciplined and patient. I am ready for this season. When I think back on all my mistakes it's no wonder I never connected with a buck.
It's funny you mentioned that particular posting. I was just talking with my uncle about that the other day. He was the only person who believed my story. Everyone else just smiled and nodded but I could tell they weren't believing me. That's OK, I know what happened and that's all that matters. DC...That was a nice buck...some day I hope to be so lucky!!! Hope you are faring well with the hurrican bearing down on you.. WI...I just noticed that I left the 402 off of your 'handle'. I apologize for that... If you want me to fix it just say the word. The StealthCam... well, I have the feeling I got one of the duds. When I checked it again it was only reading 1. One picture, one on the counter. I rewound the film and it sounded like it rewound for more than one photo. We'll see... I put in a new roll of film and made sure that it was ready. I got good coverage over a large area. I am going to check it by making it take a picture - that darned thing better advance! I'm anxious to hear how the earlybird seasons are panning out... Oct. 2 seems like years away... |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
This and the other are my last 2 season kills. As you can see I am not overly selective. Any buck closing in on 100 and better is in danger. This year I plan on holding out for atleast 120, but who knows. Let see some pics from other members
![]() |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Jen - I noticed the 402 on mine and the 88 on Kurds. It does not matter to me. It looks just fine the way it is. I think everyone knows who I am. They may not want to but they do.;) As far as the camera goes I don't know what to say. I hope some pictures come out. Be sure to post them here if they do. Maybe you should be talking to your cousin about the great deal?;)
DC - I really only have the one I posted early on here with the turkey (for bow kill). This is my 3rd year getting back into bow. Last year I let my son fill the freezer and I passed up several smaller bucks (bigger then the one below) hoping they would be bigger this season. Now he has become somewhat of a smarta$$ so I will be filling some of that freezer with does and a big buck (one I gave a free pass to last year). Here is the buck I got in 02 with a gun. I only shot him because it was our first year on this property and I had missed him early in the bow season. I hit a branch and it bent the alum arrow in half. I now will only shoot carbons. I figured the 165 grain Hornaday would not bend on any branches. It didn't.:D ![]() Let's see what else everyone has taken in the past. Gun/bow doesn't matter to me. It would just be nice to put a face with the name. If nothing else post one with your bow. As for my other logo, I ended up as a bow only hunter in the deer gun hunting contest. Guess I have double the pressure.[&:] |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Nice pics guys. It is good to put a face with a name.
Here's chubby me with my '02 doe. The red mark there is the exit hole...it was a bad shot made while the deer was moving. But it was my first deer with a bow! My '03 doe was taken with a rifle. Don't know where the pic is. I did shoot one with the bow in archery but unfortunately was unable to recover it...long story.... ![]() |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Here is a pic of my buck from last year. a small one compared to everone elses. It was my 2nd buck ever. both were this size. I think that my internet service is very slow so here is a lick to a picture of me and my 2003 buck.
![]() It was a 20 yard quartering away pass thru. He walked 10 yards, stopped and dropped, and I watched the blood pump out of him. I feild dressed him and the arrow went directly thru the heart, what a shot. I need to get some sleep, 5:00 for me tomorrow to go hit the woods. I have the bow shooting good, can't wait. Jen, don't worry about the 88, Kardkutter88 is my AOL name because Kardkutter was taken. Just a number. (No Deer moving this morning, it was 70 at sunrise) KK |

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Hey Hazcon, what are you doing? Checking out the winning team?:D I decided to get in on the other contest on the deer hunting forum that groundhunter is running. I am in that one as a bow only. This way when I get that big buck I can enter it into both contests.
KK, If you go back and edit your post with the picture you can make the pic show without clicking on it. Just put [img] in front of the link and then put [/image2] after the link but leave out the 2. I have to do that or it tries to like what I typed. Good luck to you today. Lets get something to post. |

Ordered my "Snypers" yesterday. Basspro has em' on sale $20 vs 25. My backup broadheads (the other three in the quiver) are nap Shockwaves. It will shave hair right out of the package, the accuracy is outstanding, it opens fast, and is very durable..."

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Did a little scouting yesterday just before dark. I knew rain was on the way (Ivan) so it would wash any scent away. I found a nice white oak dropping acorns about 40 yards from my number one spot - right at the corner of the corn field. I checked out the far corner of the property which is actually a small stand of trees between an empty field and the cornfield. There are trails all thru this area - lots of oaks, wild grapevine, pignuts etc. And right at the edge of the property was this rub. It is the first one I've seen this year but then I haven't been scouting the areas that I usually find them. Don't worry, I won't go near that area again unless I have to ;)
I've heard conflicting information about the size of rubs. Some say only small bucks make small rubs. Others say any buck can make a small rub. Of course when you find a huge rub then you've got something! Two years ago I found a large rub 3-4 ft. of the ground on a tree that was 1 ft. diameter. That tree was rubbed & gouged to a depth of two inches! I wonder if I can find the pic I took of that... Anyway, here is a little rub that will get the buck fever juices flowing...:) ![]() |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
This pic was taken two years ago (Sept. 2002) at the salt lick at the edge of our yard. It was getting dark and that is why the pic isn't that good. You can see that this is a young buck with great potential. It's hard to tell but I believe he was a 9 point. As far as I know no one in the neighborhood has scored a big buck in the last two years so maybe he is still out there!
![]() |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Nice pictures Jen. I hope that buck is out there for you. That would make a dandy first buck with a bow. As for the rubs I have always looked at it as big and small bucks will make small rubs but only a big buck will make big rub. Pretty much like you stated. I hope you don't get rain like NC got. I have an aunt in NC that said everything is flooding. Looks like you and Kard made some pretty nice shots on those deer. That is one hell of an exit on your doe. Congrats to both of you.
Sorry to tell all of you but I START HUNTING TOMORROW. Nanananana.:D Just Kidding around. It seems like this has taken forever to get here. I do feel sorry of you that have to wait yet. Just look at it this way. It is still too hot to hunt. We are supposed to be in the upper 70's tomorrow and Sunday.[:'(] I will be leaving with my son about 3:30 today to go to the cabin. I should be home sometime Sunday afternoon. Like I have mentioned before (many times) I am earn-a-buck so we hope to get that out of the way this weekend. We have a lot of does on the property. Gotta fill that freezer. I plan on making a bunch of sausage and brats the last weekend in Oct. That is our early gun hunt and it really is not safe to be in the woods with a bow. I will gun hunt a little but mainly just make up some venison. |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
You start tomorrow??!!!! I can't take this! I have my own small business and I'm not getting anything done. Why? Cause I'm on the internet all day reading about hunting!
It has been raining steadily since about 3 am. We are due to get at least 3-5 inches of rain. That is a lot in this area considering small creeks flood here after 1 or 2 inches. I'm safe where I am at. The only thing that can hurt me is if the creek washes out our driveway where it crosses. Then I would be stuck. Get that doe WI... It's best to fill your freezer first anyway. Between the hubby and I we have 5 tags (1 each for buck). We only have one doe tag each for where we live and then I got an extra for the 100 acre farm next door to where my parents live. In their area you can get as many tags as you want since they never sell out. It is in the management area that includes Pittsburgh. I haven't hunted there during archery because I don't get the chance to scout it. Plus, I don't know if anyone else is hunting there - I don't want to disturb another hunter. I usually save that tag for the later shotgun only season. Good luck WI.... let's get our team on the board!! |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Goodluck wihunter!!! Considering it was 90 degrees here today, I'm not too envious.
I checked the gam cam today. Got 2 new bucks. Thats makes close to 15 different bucks we have gotten pics of on our 470 acres in the last month. Unfortunately, only about 2 of them are possible shooters. But, I do have a nice young herd to manage. Good shooting!!! |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
38 degrees this morning! It's almost deer season...two more weeks!
How are you early birds doing. A field report would be nice! This pic shows my first shot at 30 yards a week ago. I never was confident at that distance. The guy at the archery shop said I never would have been very accurate at that distance on my old setup. He says I should have no problem now. The next two shots I took at 30 yards were right in the center of my Black Hole target. I've improved so much since then... Anyway, this is a carbon force arrow with a 100 grain Muzzy field tip - talk about penetration! If this were an aluminum arrow it would have shattered. Wonder what a broadhead would have done???? ![]() |
RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread
Hello, all. Well I went hunting on Saturday morning. It was very clear, calm, and dark. I walked all the way to the stand without using my light thats saying something considering that there was no moon out and the leaves are still on the trees. I was halfway back into the woods when I jumped a couple of deer. They started blowing at me, it was so dark I couldn't see them. I hunted for 3 hours and didn't see a single deer, it was a bit cooler like 50 degrees.
I've still been shooting my bow quiet a bit, I have 3 pins 15,25,and 35 yards. Well the next hunt for me will be next Saturday or Sunday. I'm waiting to hear from my cousin that went muzzelloading for Elk in Colorado. He should be back today. kk |
