I've been hitting it pretty hard lately, killed another doe last thursday. I am finally starting to see some deer. We still have a few weeks before the rut get here. I took my nephew out friday morning and he shot a nice 9pt, it was awesome.

I hope to connect with a buck in the next few weeks. I will be out there through the end of January, trying to add one for the team.

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

I've been out with my Remington 700. I've seen a few does and a one point one horn buck. There was another buck but it was so far away that I couldn't tell what it was. The only thing that has come into bow range was a dumb little BB (but I don't have a doe tag for this area anymore anyway). I did a small drive for the hubby but when I got to the deer they went up instead of down. We have seen Limpy Leg (a 5 point) gimping around the woods. It sure is sad to see him limping from cover to cover. He doesn't go far in his condition.
I'm in today because of high winds 40-60 mph. I don't want to be out there when a large tree or branch falls. I did hear a few shots so I guess there are a couple of die-hards out there. If the wind dies down I might go out for the evening.
Friday and Saturday I will be heading in to hunt with my brother. I do have a doe tag for there. This place is in a shotgun slug-only (or bow/crossbow) area.
I've gotta save some money and get some cold weather archery gear for next year...
How are you guys doing out there? Some of those other teams are pulling way ahead with 5 bucks! I now wonder about being Team 13[&o]

Well, I've only hunted once since downing my buck. 4 hours the day after thanksgiving, Yes I got up at 5:00 to go hunting/not shopping!! and I loved every minute of it. I was walking around in my back yard yesterday and found one deer scrape. It was huge, 10"diameter tree 2 feet up and down. Last year we have 3 buck that stayed together a 8 pont a 4 point one sided and a spike. I think this deer might be theeither of the first 2. I would guess a 2.5 year old. Maybe a 3.5 wishing. I think I can still get another buck. Indiana has a one buck limit but since I live in a urban deer zone I think that gives me the right to take 2. I'm heading out tomorrow morning. This will be the last time I get to hunt on a week day for a while. I start my new job on Monday. I have posted a few pictures on photobuck.com of me and my hobbies. My album is you guessed it KARDKUTTER88. I scared up 3 doe today in my back yard. I think they are looking for food because we have no accorns on the trees. I just bought 100 pounds of corn for $6 at a grain store. That should last a little bit and give the squirrels and deer somthing to eat. One of the teams have 6 bucks for over 600 inches !!!!!!![X(][X(]
Its still been fun.
Good luck everyone,
kk

DC you keep hitting it hard. Glad to hear you are starting to see some deer. I know you were having a hard time early in the season. Maybe it will pay off now.

Jen I know what you mean about the wind. Not a great time to be out. Good luck this weekend. I don't have any cold weather archery gear either but because our gun season where I am at starts the Saturday before thanksgiving and goes until the end of bow (Jan. 3) I have to wear orange. So I just use that.

Kard good luck to you too getting that second buck. Make SURE you are allowed a second one before you go. I sure would hate to read a post from you that you got busted because you didn't know. I will be checking out your photos soon.

Everyone guess what. The F'N CAST is OFF.:D I now have the walking boot. The Doctor says it is looking real good. She told me I can start to put some weight on it now and I should be back to regular shoes in the next 4 to 6 weeks. I really may have a chance at getting out that last weekend of our bow season.:D This is ALMOST as exciting as opening day of bow season. Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes from all you. This contest has really helped me alot.

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

Well, just checkin in... The first week of the gun season did not go well. I only had two deer within shooting distance - a BB for which I do not have a doe tag and a 6 or 8 point. I did not shoot the 6 or 8 point because I could not decide if he was legal. Here in PA with the 4 point per side restrictions made me question the shot. His fourth points on both sides only appeared to be about a half inch. SO frustrating![:@] I had him in my sights at 10 yards - I could have taken him with my bow!
I hunted with my brother on Fri. and Sat. in two different shotgun only areas. Seen a couple of does on Fri. but they were so far off. We ran into a couple of other hunters who said they had a couple shots at a group of 17. 3 of the 17 were bucks.
The deer are all herded up here since there is so much pressure. Thursday night I looked thru the binoculars at a nearby farm field. There were over 30 deer there! Several of them were bucks too. And the funny thing about it is that a half an hour earlier the hunters over there were still in the woods. Soon as they left the deer flooded the field.
We have gun season until Saturday then it is over until Dec. 27th. During the late season I can hunt here (and freeze) with a bow for two weeks or I can go to the Special Regulations area and use a bow or shotgun. Maybe once the deer have a chance to rest over the holiday I might have a chance to use the bow again. They are just too spooked right now.

WI - It's great that you got the cast off. I know how you felt having it. I was in an accident when I was young. I had a broken knee and fractured pelvis. I had to wear a cast from upper thigh to ankle for six weeks - plus I wasn't allowed out of bed. Talk about miserable!

KK - I enjoyed looking at your photos...

What about the rest of you guys? What's going on in your neck of the woods?

I have taken my son on two rifle hunts. He killed this 4x3 mulie and he also just filled his cow elk tag. (both are firsts for him). This weekend I will be helping a buddy on his cow elk hunt. I have an archery Javelina hunt in January. My son has a rifle Javelina hunt in Feb. We both have turkey tags in April. That is about as far as my hunting plans go for now.

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

DC - Congratulations to your boy! He looks really proud. That looks like a nice mulie - would be a 5x4 here. A javelina hunt would be awesome....

Ran into a neighboring hunter last week. He asked if he and his fellow hunters could drive the property. Hubby told them to go right ahead. I was furious at this at first because I feel that my woods are my sanctuary. Well, turns out the guy said we could hunt his and his family's property. They have a couple hundred acres of mostly farmland. We went up to talk to him today and he pointed out all the property and even drove us back in one field to show where his treestand is. He said we could use it any time. So, I feel in a way I've given up the privacy in my sanctuary but gained one heck of a hunting ground. Plus, I was told there is only one guy in their group that bow hunts. I am now looking forward to next fall. In the off season I'm gonna have a lot of scouting to do.

Today I took a shot (with the rifle) at a large doe running. Normally I would never shoot at a running deer but this one was only about 20 yards away. I thought I had a good shot. Thankfully I had a clean miss. Now I will be even more hesitant to shoot at a running deer. Definitely would never attempt it with the bow. Funny how archery instills discipline in you...

PLB - Congrats to your boy. I know how proud you are. I have been there too as I have stated in here. What a great feeling to be there for their first.

Jen - I don't know that I could allow others on our property. I do understand what you are getting but I don't think I could do it. Good luck to you with the scouting.

Not much new for me. It still looks like I will be getting out new years weekend. Our season ends then so that will be it for me. I should get the ok to start walking in regular shoes and boots on the 29th.:D Matt said he will make sure I can get out that weekend. Even if I don't see anything it will be worth it just to be back this year.

Well good luck everyone. I hope to hear soon that we are putting up more points. DC I know you are getting into your prime time.

WOW, WI it looks like you have a hardware store in your leg. Its amazing what medical science can do these days. I bet you'd have difficulty getting onto an airplane :D:D:D:D.

I've hunted only once since i've gotten my buck. I just haven't wanted to enough. Plus, there's no room left in the freezer.

I did get my deer salami and snack sticks back yesterday. $95 dollars later I have 30 pounds of salami and 15 pounds of snack sticks. It was worth it though.

KK - One thing I learned the hard way was DO NOT ICE THE ANKLE. I have been rehabing it and it was getting sore so I put an ice pack on the side. Well the metal conducts the cold right to the bone. I couldn't even move it until it warmed back up.[:@] The venison sounds great. I can't wait to start making up some of ours.

IM still in the game. Still have a Buck tag for late archery season. Starts after XMAS, can't wait. Lots of nice deer made it through rifle season. I was talking to my brother inlaw the other day and he said he say 8 bucks in his one field the other nite. Two 8pts two 10pts and some small bucks.

Good luck hatchet, late season is always a fun time to be hunting.

I'm still having a tough season. I looked at my log and I've been hunting 31 times this year and I've seen 11 deer from the stand, 4 in bow range, I killed 2 of those does. I've only seen one buck, and I had my nephew with me and he killed that deer with a rifle. Typically by now I have seen a dozen or more good bucks. This year has been strange, we only had our first frost about 2 weeks ago. So the woods have been full of browse and we also had one of the best acorn crops I have ever seen. All this contributes to poor deer movement IMO, they simply don't have to travel to feed.

I'm expecting things to heat up after Christmas. Our rut still hasn't hit yet, I would expect anyday now for things to get exciting. Good luck to all in their late season hunting.

Well, they're starting to give weather reports for after Christmas and it looks OK. Beginning Dec. 27th we can hunt for two weeks. I'll go out on certain mornings & evenings when it's not too darned cold. Hopefully we can get a little more snow on the ground so the deer will move.
I'd sure like to be able to use my buck tag. I know there's some out there still that outwitted the relentless deer drives by the rifle hunters. Reports are that there is a nice 12 point running around.
I would like to get another deer in the freezer since we didn't do well during the rifle hunt...

WI - that ankle really looks nasty. It doesn't look like it would be too comfortable even when its healed. I hope that it is though - would like to hear that you are able to get out there and hunt again

HatchetJack - get out there and get one of those bucks!

D.C. Sure hope the rut brings you a nice buck.

Let's go guys! There's still 8 of us that can score a buck (I think).

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYONE!!!!

Hi all, WI hope the leg is doing better, goodluck DC and PAJen. Hey we might not win the thing but we can go out with a bang if some of us score. Late season is a tuff time to get a deer in our state, hey PaJen COLDDDDDD[:-]. I had a great archery season, seen lot of nice bucks. I let a real nice 6pt walk first hour of rifle season. Same day I also seen a smaller 6pt and a 5pt. There some real nice Bucks still walking around my Brother inlaws farm in Bucks co. I can,t wait for the 27th I washed all my hunting gear and Im ready. Its opening day all over again:D I think It's better to go out mid morning than first light when its real cold PaJen. The deer move more mid day being a little warmer and your not a popcikle by 9am. GOODLUCK ALL BE SAFE:D

Hey guys and gal,
Well I have been getting around real good at home with out the walking boot. Looks like the whole family (Wife, Son and Daughter) and I will be heading to the cabin for new years weekend. Life gets pretty busy this time of year with Matt in hockey and Sara in basket ball so we are going to get some away time. I am planning on taking the bow and getting out some for that last weekend of our season. It feels like it is opening weekend all over again. Thanks for all the well wishes from all of you. It really does NOT hurt at all it is just tough to get everything moving again. My range of motion is not what it used to be BUT I will get it back. At least I will get out one last time this season. I sure didn't think I would be to this point so soon. I was told it would be mid to late Jan before I would be walking again.

19" of snow and a state of emergency!!!!!! No hunting for me. Just lots and lots of snow shoveling. Boy are mky arms tired. Just got up from a 2 hour nap. The coolest thing happened last night. I went out into the woods last night in pajama pants, t-shirt, and my coveralls. I wore a pair of gators with my boots so my feet stayed dry and warm. I didn't have my bow b/cause hunting after hours in frowned apon for some reason. The deer that were running around were almost up to their bellies!!!! I was by myself in the woods when I saw a huge flash. The sky lit up. and a couple seconds later I heard thunder. Winter storm thunder storm!!! I was soooooo cool.

Walking in 19" of snow is hard work very tirering. I even saw a squirrel running in the snow. It was pretty funny. I'll post pitchers when I have them developed.

I have 4 days off and a deer tag left and I can't even go hunting. O'well

Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!!!

Sure is quiet on the archery board lately...
Due to a death in my family (and Christmas) I did not get to archery hunt this week. I am hoping to go out next week. We can hunt here until Jan. 15th. I did go out with my brother on Wed. & Thu. to hunt for doe with a rifle. Wed. I didn't see a single deer and then Thu. I scored a small doe. I made sure to thank my Dad for the Redfield scope he got me for Christmas - I got a perfect heart shot. Then I had to drag the darned deer for a half a mile!
At this place we hunted there is a very thick section that hunters can't even walk thru. The deer are always in this area as we hear them run around as we walk the trail around it. I was thinking about taking the bow and finding the best trail and trying to sneak in there. I know there has to be a nice buck in there. Yesterday when we went back out something was crashing thru there straight towards me and then made a dead stop. It sounded like an elephant. As long as it isn't too cold I will take the bow and crawl in there one day. Otherwise, I will take the bow out on certain mornings and evenings here at home.
I hope all of you had a nice holiday and that you have a Happy New Year!

Kard I heard about all the snow. Sure hope some of it has melted by now. Deep snow sure is hard on a deer heard.

As for me I got out hunting.:D I didn't get anything or even see a deer but at least I got out. Guess I was unable to help out the team.[:o] Good luck to all of you that are still hunting.

Jen, I hope everything is going better for you now.

The snow here is already gone. Even the big piles at the stores. I has been getting up to over 60 the last 4-5 days.

I've been feeding the deer in my back yard and today was somthing else. I got home from work and filled up the bird feeder. I came in side to put my lunch box away just for a minute. I went back out and there was a yearling eating. It ran away when my nephew came out and yelled at it. all 3 came in about 4 minutes later. I was standing/walking 20 yards away. The season ended yesterday. I wouldn't have taken them b/c baiting is a nono in Indiana. it still is pretty cool looking at deer at eye level, being a stand hunter in all.

Wi good luck to you and the rest of the team.

Thanks guys....

I finally went out with the bow today. It was warm for here this time of year (about 50) but that's alright for me. It finally wasn't raining - but not for long - two more days of rain after today.
I seen two deer. I'm pretty sure one was a doe but all I saw was a big body on the other. I guess it's good that something legal didn't come along as I forgot my release. This was the first time I have ever forgotten it. I'm confident enough to shoot without it but you just never know. I also saw two fresh scrapes at the edge of the field - kinda odd to see them this time of the year.

WI - I'm glad you got out to hunt even if it wasn't productive...

After the 15th I will put out new salt licks and maybe some deer will come into the yard like last winter.
I did get my last roll of Stealth cam pics back just before Christmas. There were a few doe and one nice 8 point that showed up on Nov. 1. I took the camera down when the rifle season started - didn't want it to disappear with all the other hunters in the woods. If I get a chance to scan the pic I will post it. I will put the camera up again soon...

Something to laugh about.... My brother helped me to clean my doe. This doe had the biggest fullest stomach you could imagine. Plus, it must have been in the process of defecating when I shot it. We could not get the last of the intestines out at the end and crap was going everywhere. [:'(] Neither of us ever had that much trouble. It was disgusting but it was funny. My poor brother had it all over his hands and there was no way to clean it off except to wipe it on a t-shirt. This deer will forever be known as the shi!!y deer!

PA.Jen sorry to hear about the death in the family.
Its Jan 5 as I write this. Our season here in TX ends 1st Sun in Jan. always. Well No Bow bucks for me. Did kill my first Bobcat, with my rifle. The Cat had me "made" but was not sure. I watched it watching me thru its golden yellow eyes at about 15 yards, its bobtail twitching. A great deer hunting year. Two of my grandsons killed their first deer, both were dandy bucks. One buck a 10 pointer killed by 12 yr old Patrick. The second a big 8 point killed by 10 year old Ben. Ben has hunted with me before but this was the first time he had the gun.

I'm still trying wihunter!!! Deer sighting have definitely picked up, but still slow. The weather has been horrible lately. 70 degres for the past week and calling for 70's for another 10 days.[:@] But, the bucks are ruttting hard and I plan to go all day tomorrow and then again on Saturday. After that I will probably hit the woods a few more times on the weekends and then it will be over!![:'(]

To be honest I'm ready to chalk this season up to learning new land and start over fresh for next season.

Yeah, it looks like Hatchet Jack and I are done in PA...
In a way I am glad the season is over cause I'm really burnt out. I only got out three times this week but it feels like I was out every day. One day I had a doe in range but I couldn't shoot cause I used my tag for this management area. The only buck I had in range to shoot was the one that I couldn't tell if it had four points per side or not. For the whole bow season I believe I only saw three legal bucks. My first ever buck will have to wait until next season. At least I got two does for the freezer....
I wish I could have scored a buck for the team... It was fun being on a team and it would be great to be able to carry over the same team next season. There's still time for a couple of you guys to score - I know our team won't win but at least we weren't last!
Now it's time to think about the spring gobbler. When I was out a couple of days ago when it was 60 degrees there were turkeys gobbling. Seems a little early but I guess that warm weather must have gotten them frisky. On the farm nearby I could see about 100 turkeys. Looks like there will be plenty around on opening day. Are any of you guys gonna sign up for the turkey contest? I was on the winning team last year.;)

Count me in on the turkey contest. The same team would be cool next season I have no problem with that. It sure was nice talking to all my teamates from my great state of Pa and all the other great hunting states on my team. IT WAS FUN Goodluck and be safe in 2005:D
