OK guys looking at the offical score card page we are listed as team "Lucky 13". Anyone have a problem with keeping that? It really doesn't matter to me. Like the old saying "I would rather be lucky then good". Of course being both is even better.

Everyone needs to go to the check in thread so we can have an idea of what we need.

Also, what is everyone's background and hunting successes?

I'm 27, killed by first deer with a bow at 13. I had almost got out of bowhunting for several years during college, but once I graduated 4 years ago, I started hunting seriously again. The only weapon I use is bow. I have 4 months each season to pursue bucks. I guess I've killed 1/2 dozen bucks and about 20 does with my bow, going consecutive seasons the last 2 years. I've always hunted areas where we were limited as to what we could shoot, so I've let hundreds of bucks scoring under 100 walk. My goal for this season is 2 bucks, one P&Y in Illinois and I will settle for 115 and up here in MS. I can't wait for the season to begin!!!

Let's here everyone's story

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

I'm 23, started hunting at 18. I arrowed my first deer on the last open moring of the 1999 deer season. It was a passthru shot at 15 yards. I've killed a total of 6 deer all with my Velocity Extreme XI bow that I purchased for $105! It was brand spankin new. XI was stoping production at the Evansville plant and sent all the unsold bows to the scratch and dent store. Awesome dual cam bow. I've downed 2 bucks, one last year at 20 yards quatering away, gutted it and found that the arrow went directly through the heart! The other buck was shot in the 01 season, the only deer that came up to me. Both bucks were 2.5 years old and 7 points. I've seen lots bigger deer just haven't gotten one yet. This is the year of the mount!! I made the switch from aluminums to carbons this year, with an addition of a whisker bisket. Last year was my first 2 deer season, butchered both myself.... well with the help of some beer drinking buddies:D. The freezer is empty so I'm looking for one to fill it up.:D

Thats my deer huntin history.

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

This is the thread DC is talking about. [link]http://forum.hunting.net/asppg/tm.asp?m=733433[/link]
I still have not heard back from blklab or mnrut. Maybe they are on vacation. Let's see if we hear back from them by next week.

I posted some of my info early in this thread. A picture to go with the name would also be fun if anyone would care to post one before they get their buck.;)

I started bow hunting when I was 16. I had noone to show me so I was self taught. I hunted pretty regular until my son (smartass hoyt14 on team 10) started to come with. Back in '92 when he was 4 I met a neighbor who did a lot of waterfowl hunting. Well I took that up and we would take out boys everywhere we went. This allowed me to spend my time in the outdoors with my son (and daughter) which I didn't feel I could do too well bow hunting. Somehow (years later) he remembered when I used to come home in camo with face paint on. He told me one day 3 years ago that he would like to try bow hunting. Well that was it. We hunted the last 2 years on 80 acres that my Dad purchased for "family hunting". After those 2 years we decided this is what we want to do. We both got new bows this year and have never looked back.

I used to be the guy that would pull the bow out a week before the season, shoot 10 shots in a nice group at 20 yards and say that's enough. This year we both have been shooting 100-150 shot a week since March. Until this year I never would have thought about shooting more then 20 yards. I have shot 3 inch groups at 40 this fall. Not all the time but I feel very confident on deer out to 30 or 35.

I have not shot a deer these last two years as I was holding out for the big buck. We are in a earn-a-buck area but we can earn the buck tag with a gun or bow and use it with either. This year I will be shooting the first decent doe to come by to get the buck tag. Last year I got my doe with a gun in the early gun season. WI regs are all screwed up in the CWD zone.

Over all confidence is very high because all the bucks I passed up last year are looking good and that first year we were still learning the place. Sorry this got a little windy. Just excited I guess. Just got in from shooting before I started this.:D

I started hunting when I was 12yrs old, bowhunting when 16yrs old. I hunt deer with bow and gun,but bowhunting is my obsession. I hunt Ducks, grouse, and Turkeys. I hunt hard and go all out, my wife thinks Im crazzzy. I think she might be wright:) Two hunting buddys and I have a 12' x 60' trailer in Pike co PA on 4 acres bordering the Delaware State Forest [12,000+ acres]. I have permission to hunt 2 farms 900 acres+ in Susky co pa, great Turkey and Deer spot. I do most of my Bowhunting though in Bucks. montgomery, and Philadelphia CO's. These co's are close to home and I have many spots in the countys. Lot of scouting. I also have 3 great spots on the Delaware river that are hard to get too, and take alot of work, but they are well worth it!! My best bow kill is a 10pt 125 from Illionios in 2000,had a chance at a 150+ last year in Illionios but I waited for a better shot and, well [:@] I shoot a Champion Stinger, but I did buy a Bowtech Liberty. Im having a little trouble setting it up though. I only take shots out to 25yards and it must be a good oneI don't think I ever shot a deer over 25 yards. I love deer meat and shoot 3 to 5 doe a year for meat. I will not shoot small Bucks!! Let them walk . 8pt or better, maybe a reallll big 6or 7pt [maybe]. Oh I forgot to tell you guy's about my Brother inlaws farm in Bucks co . It'shas deer like ticks on a redbone hound, I call it the ATM-MAC machine.for deer:D Goodluck to all the Lucky 13, Hunt hard,be SAFE!!!!

Wow, I just read the post "serious question." If any of you want to read go for it, but I'll warm you in advance that it is a very serious and unfriendly thread. DoubleCreek, I don't think I officialy welcomed you here. Thank you for filling the spot.:) If Silent was still on the team, and I was getting ready to take a shot at a huge deer I would be thinking to my self, "don't miss this deer[:@], because Silent will be mad at you if you don't take a P&Y buck." But don't get me wrong. If a huge buck comes up on me, I'll still be shaken like a leaf:D:D:D:D:D

Go Lucky 13

Hey kk. That thread is why I was wondering about our bad rap. Silent knows nothing about me and I would bet nothing about anyone else on this team. I did feel a little like he was saying we were not worthy of being on the team with him. That may not be the case at all but it did come across that way to me.

I am very happy with things so far. We are still missing mnrut and blklab but I am sure they will check in. I emailed them a few days ago. I just hope everyone has a good time with this. As I mentioned earlier my son is on team 10 and we have been trading shots at each other. I think it is a great addition to our season.

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

I am 31 years old and was introducted into hunting (mostly rifle) as a kid, hunting with my dad. I have always loved hunting, but with military assignments, it wasn't always possible. After a tour over seas in 2002, I decided to never let another hunting season pass without me being out there in the field. Thus, 2003, was my first serious year of bow hunting. I passed on a 2 point mulie (that is a 4 pointer for you eastern folk) and never got another chance (archery wise). I was able to get a Coues whitetail on the rifle hunt last year.

Here in AZ, we only get 1 buck per season and Archery deer is the only OTC tag you can still purchase, everything else is draw only. By the way, I heard on the news today that there is a fire in Kaibab National Forest. I hope it doesn't ruin my hunt as it is my only hunt this year. I am looking forward to this years hunt and sure hope to bag one. I plan to pass on the little ones early on in the hunt, but, I sure don't want an empty freezer this year, besides, those young ones taste good!

I hope we all have fun with competition, I know that I will. In case any of you are worried, I will not throw stones at anyone who fails to fill their tag or shoots a little one.

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

So, how do you guys feel about having a gal on your team? I hope its OK... I know how some guys are!
I am 37 and grew up in a hunting family though I only started hunting 3 years ago - two years ago for bow. My father and brothers were pretty successful and the one brother we jokingly equate to Grizzly Adams. I have shot a doe in my two archery seasons though last years I was unable to recover (long story). I've also gotten two does during the rifle seasons.
I am self-taught. I went to Dicks Sporting Goods one day and asked the clerk for a left-handed bow. Tried one and didn't care for it. The 2nd one I liked and bought - it's a Reflex. Not a top of the line bow but it fits me. I'm shooting at 57-58 lbs. though I believe I'm going to up the weight a couple of lbs. I'm using a Cobra release which has never failed me yet. Also, I'm using Muzzy 100's - tried mechanicals and didn't care for them. Just got a new Black Hole cube target - I shot my old bag target to pieces.
I seen a lot of bucks last year of which half were legal (4 point per side rule here), but only two were in range - hit a twig and missed both times. So, I've learned to clear all twigs! I've only seen a couple of 6 points so far this year but then I haven't been out scouting. We have one monster buck (12 or better with huge tines) which I have seen once each year- the first year I seen him I was close and I got huge buck fever - shook my arrow right off the rest! As far as I know none of my neighbors got him so maybe he's still there.
As for my hunting conditions: I have 32 acres which is mostly wooded slope with a creek at the bottom. There are farms on two sides - one of which is planted with corn this year. There are good trails leading out of the corners of the corn right into my woods. One stand I have is about 50 yards over a rise and downwind of the corn. I'm setting up another overlooking the small field with apple trees between me and the creek. Also, we have plenty of oak trees which are finally producing acorns this year - it was bad due to locusts and drought previous years. I also have access to two other private lands which I might try for a change of luck.
So that's about it...sorry to ramble... I'm ready for the season!!!
By the way "LUCKY 13" works for me...

my name's Jen (in case you haven't figured that out)

Good luck guys!

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

PLB,
A big THANK YOU for your service. Keep us updated about that fire. I sure do hope it does not mess things up for you. I like the attitude of just have fun. I too will not "throw stones". My son, Hoyt14 on team 10, is 16 and I think he will be taking any legal buck. Whatever he gets will be a true trophy. Hunt for you and we will just add our scores up. I have a few real nice bucks on our place and will be looking for one of them. Last year I got nothing because of waiting so if someone gets a small one that is better then a nothing. I am already a winner because of this contest. It has added to my season with my son already. And now I get to know 9 (7 so far) other fellow hunters from around the country. I am very interested to see how everyone does and learning about how all of you hunt. Winning would be a bonus just like taking a deer would be a bonus to the hunt. It is all about the experience.

Jen,
I love the idea of a gal on the team. At this time my wife is just not interested in hunting but loves to come to camp and just spend the time relaxing away from everything. Our daughter (14) has shown a slight interest but is really still to busy with her friends. When I was waterfowl hunting all those years she was with me almost as much as my son. I am hoping that later in life she will come back to it. Even my son (16) is starting to hunt less because of work and the "gurls". You mention uping your weight a couple of pounds. Think about that hard. I got my new bow this hear (60-70 xTec) and planned on taking it up to 70 by the season. Once up to about 68 I realized that the extra weight was making it hard for me and was not needed. I cranked it back down to my current 62 and am very confortable. When sitting in that stand for a few hours those extra pounds could make the difference between a smooth draw and no draw. Good luck finding that big guy. Just relax (yeah right) when he does come in.

Sorry to ramble but as you all must know by now I am very excited about this season. I also check this sight daily. I am planning on taking the laptop to the cabin since we have a phone line to it I should be able to dial in. Life it great right now and I am going to enjoy it.:D

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

No worries Jen, you as much a member of this team as anyone else is.

I wish my wife liked hunting, like you wihunter402, my better half will come along for the camping and that is about it (depending on the weather).

And as for the service, IT WAS AN HONOR!

Jen, I also agree with wihunter as to the poundage. I was told that you should be able to draw your bow while sitting flat on the ground with your legs out in front of you without having to raise your bow above your shoulder. #62 is plenty of pounds for deer, heck it's good enough for elk.

PAhunterJEN 08-28-2004 03:49 PM

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

I guess you're probably right about raising the poundage. I remember reading about a guy who missed a shot last year because he was weak from being sick. I wouldn't want that to happen... It just seemed like drawing the bow and holding it was becoming too easy. Don't they say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it?"
On another note... my husband isn't into hunting. He will hunt during the rifle season and that is about it. Even then he's not very enthusiastic about it. Sometimes I think he does it just to please me. Weird reversal huh?!

Has anyone here come up with a team logo (or whatever you call it?). I might be able to come up with something as I have a bunch of graphics programs...

Weird reversal huh?!
That it is.

I was thinking about something for a logo but I really am not that good with graphics. So I say go for it. I was thinking something like "Better Lucky then Good" with all our names. Just a suggestion. I really don't know how to make it look good. See what you can do with it. I know it will be better then anything I can do.:D

Kardkutter88 08-28-2004 06:22 PM

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

Wow Jen, if you want to design up a Logo go for it!

It just seemed like drawing the bow and holding it was becoming too easy.
I only wish I could say that with a 58# bow. I shoot a 62 # bow and I don't find its getting much easier. I'm afraid to lessen the poundage because the screws are backed out pretty far already.
I just killed another groundhog:), that makes 5 for the year. Those things just tear up the ground so bad that my neighbor is letting me deer hunt there if I take out most of the ground hogs. I use a marin modle 60 with CCI mini mags. I am hunting out of the woods on a 12-15 foot drop off. I cut out a small hole in the woods over looking a flat clover yard. I killed the largest of the group today, I'd say an easy 15 pounds.

First squirrels then Groundhogs and next Deer.
Happy hunting

RE: Official Team "Lucky 13" (13) Thread

Wihunter,

On the official rules forum, some are now saying NO MULIES. Last I heard measurement for mulies would be multiplied by .833 to even things out.

If the rule makers are changing things now, then I will have to pull out of the contest. I can't hunt whitetail's in AZ, just don't have them here. Anyway, I think it would be fair to figure this out ASAP. I am leaving for my hunt on Sept. 8th. The hunt starts Sept. 10th.

For the record. I DO NOT WANT TO LEAVE THE CONTEST. This should have been addressed much earlier if other hunters had a problem with this.

Let me know what the decission of the high counsel is.

Thanks,

PLB

Hey PLB. I just got back from checking the trail cameras and the new food plots. I will do some checking into this Mulie thing. I too was under the impression that we would just multiply by .833. That only seems fair. Keep checking the posts and hang in there. I'll be fighting for you.

Wihunter,

I just want to have fun and be a part of this competition. If I kill the biggest buck of this competition they everyone can cry foul and kick me out of the game, at that point I will be buisy finding a good taxidermist, and wont care.:D:D:D But this is extremely unlikely. Heck, I'm I just hoping to fill my tag with something bigger than a fork horn.

You are most certainly welcome. I truely feel it is only fair. Here are a couple of pics. The first one I posted earlier. The last two I just got today. I sure hope I can find one when the season starts and after I shoot my doe (damn earn-a-buck[:'(]).

Wi, that's a nice buck you got there. He would make a fine trophy!! Wish I had a game cam... maybe I could sneak one on the credit card and the hubby won't know any better if I keep the pics a secret - could I actually keep it a secret????

PLB, whaddya mean Do I ride my Harley to work??? Just what are you insinuating? Do I sound tough? HAHAHA Well check this out.....when I got my Taurus .357 short barrel we set up a pie plate with a 1 inch square at approx. 25 yards - first shot I hit dead center. My hubby now tells everyone he will never get me mad and turn his back!!!!:D

I've decided on my 3rd and 4th stands - the 3rd will be in a maple about 50 yards from the far corner of the corn field. There is a nice oak with acorns about 20 yards away, and also what we call a fire trail about 10 yards away. The fire trail is a 15 ft. wide clearing cut in a line thru the woods. The deer use it a lot on their way to bedding areas. The 4th stand is actually a ground blind. It is at the top of a steep hill overlooking the 40 yd. wide funnel between 'my' woods and the 'neighbors' woods. I can see the deer coming for about 100 yards which is great if the wind cooperates...

I'll see what I can do about that logo.... Wi, can I use your buck photo to possibly use for the logo?

I do it all the time.;) You could always tell him that you are borrowing it from a friend. Then after about 6 months your "friend" found a newer one that is better and sold you this "used" one for next to nothing. He'll never know what hit him.:D

If you look at those pics I think you will see that the first one is a different deer then the last 2. I'm pretty sure the last 2 are the same deer.

Jen,

Just joking with you. I had an old Army buddy who's wife was into harley's. She drove a full sized soft-tail, while he drove a sportsters. I don't if you know about harley's, but sportster's are often refered to as "ladies bikes". I was kind of funny seeing them ride side by side with him on a bike half the size of hers.

Wihunter, I hope to shoot something half that size:D:D:D.

ONLY 9 MORE DAYS UNTIL I LEAVE FOR THE HUNT!!!!!!!!

As for a logo... what do you guys think of this:

LUCKY 13
Luck of the Draw!

or

Is it really luck of the draw?

Think of 'draw' as in drawing back your bow.

Of those 2 I would like "Luck of the Draw". Here are some of the other ones that were mentioned earlier in this post.

Lucky 13
Twack Addicts
Twack Heads
Addicted to Twack
Team long shot
Whitetail Predators
Forget the Win, Just Hunt

See what everyone else thinks.

To all,
I emailed mnrut and blklab again. I told them that if they wanted in we would still love to have them. I also told them they had until Saturday to let us no. I guess this weekend they will assign alternates as needed. Just wanted to keep you all updated.:D

Might as well keep LUCKY 13...... I feel that since the teams were made up for two weeks now it's kinda silly to change it.
So.....for Lucky 13 I like the thought of adding "Luck of the Draw" I've made one logo with this and I have our 'screen names' listed along with it. Unless you all vote otherwise I'm gonna work on this to make it a little better then I will post it for everyone to use in their signature. I will have it ready for this weekend and hopefully we won't have to change the names due to alternate members...

33 more days to my season starts!!! I am excited! Spent some time in the woods this morning checking out the trails and clearing some branches. Once I am satisfied that everything is just right then I will stay out of the woods until the season starts.

Off to get things done...

Sounds great Jen. Good news for everyone. I heard back from Blklab. He is in. He will be posting here soon. Now all we have left is MNrut. I'll keep everyone posted. He didn't mention where he hunts but I am sure he will do that here.

Hello Fellow team mates. this is Ed AKA BLKLAB. Sorry I am so late to get with the program I have alot going on at work anD Home. But that is int he past and I am back to read and post. I seen alot of bios so here is mine. I am 36 and live in Nevada MO I have been bow hunting since 1997. I shot my first 2 deer that winter. I ended up shooting 2 bucks with in 15 minutes of each other. Althoug not monster they were my first 2 it has me hooked. I did not hunt allot last year due to Duck Hunting. My other addiction.
I hunt with a Hoyt Vortec and shoot 3d with my Hoyt Pro tec, I usually hunt private land But this year I am going to give the public a fair shot. I have been seeing some monsters over the past couple days. The bad deal I am sure others have seen the as well. I am anxious to get started this year our season opens 2 weeks earlier. in 16 days to be exact. So needless to say I am getting excited. I am sure we are all going to have great season and I wish the best of luck to all.

Ed
