RE: Official "Lung Busters" (5) Thread
I should be in bed but am too pumped!! The Game begins at 6:20 AM tomorrow...eeerrrr... today. Tyler is geared up too but finally hit the sack at midnight. Boy is he excited about his first hunt.
We will be hunting the corner of a corn field... kitty corner to a 15 acre alflafa hay field that is green and lush from the last cutting. No trees so we will be using a natural ground blind or in other words...we will be hiding in the corn. LOL There is a decent buck there. If he shows up Tyler has first dibbs at 20 yards and under. I got dibbs from 20 to 35 yards unless Tyler can/wants to put a stalk on him. He's been practicing on the cotton tails, cats and dogs in town here this summer. Would be great to see him try a stalk on a deer. There is no rush known to man as good as stalking within 20 yards of a buck nor no worse feeling when you blunder. It would be one education he will never forget. I've got to be at work at 9 AM but if it isn't fit for combining, I am done at 1 PM. We got the evening hunt already plan should that happen. It is in our honey hole. Did some last minute scouting tonight from a far. Glass a 140 class buck heading up the trail to Tyler's stand. Bucks should be thinking about shedding their velvet. Our stands are in the only trees in that immediate area. Should be a good time tomorrow night. The does also like Tyler's stand area. I made him pick all his tree stand areas as I want him to think for himself with some guidance from me. We talked deer since he was 6 and he knows more about them then I did when I was 25 ( He's 13 ). He has chosen very good spots but that one will be a toughy with all the does. It will be interesting to see if he can get through the night without getting busted. Another educational experience at the very least, I'm thinking with the ladies!! LOL Gawd, it is going to be great no matter what the out come!! Bring it on!! Tim |

update
5:40 Am and when I said "Bring it on" in the previous post, I didn't have on mind an 1.5 inch of rain come pouring down and still raining as I type. Booming pretty good too. Thinking the corn field will be a sloppy mess but still entertaining the thought of hunting the edge though if it quits raining soon. Could hunt some CRP. We are going to head out now and hopefully it quits raining by the time we decide on which place and get there. Tim |

Can't wait to hear how things turn out, Tim. I hope Tyler has a great experience on his first hunt. Good Luck.
The deer down here in Nebraska have just shed their velvet in the last three days or so. I woke up this morning and while eating breakfast and watching Tom Miranda on ESPN outdoors, I saw a little 4 point basket buck with his velvet off. I saw him on Monday or Tuesday this past week and he still had velvet then. |

Good luck to you and your son TJF. :D

Was a wet morning hunt. Quit raining till we got to our spot but drenched us shortly after. Had a doe show up and found a spot where it looked like two moose slugged it out. Boy they had the small area all tore up!!
Evening hunt went better. I had three buck and two does with fawns walk by at 20 yards with the biggest buck going 120. Passed as they were heading in Tyler's direction. One of them finally got to Tyler right after legal shooting hours. Would have been a 10 yard broadside shot. Needless to say, Tyler got a taste of the fever even though he couldn't shot. He was in in 7th heaven and is geared up again for tomorrow. He did get quite a few does and fawns running around him during the hunt. Didn't bust him so he thought he did good. Tomorrow looks like patchy fog in the morning but we will still try to make it out just incase it clears up. Talking rain during the day but hopefully we can still get an evening hunt in. Weather is being a pain but we are getting to hunt so far. Could be worse. Tim ps So far all buck seen are still in velvet. Haven't seen any rubs yet. |
