Thorson, I have a Horton Stag 150# recurve x-bow. They don't make them any more. Definitely not your top of the line crossbow, but it has worked well for me for 2 deer and 2 elk now.
Ranger, I never thought it would be me in that picture, even though I live in elk country and see them all the time. I have been close several times before but something has always gone wrong and I hadn't been able to pulloff killing one of the big boysin the past. Ihave hunted them with a traditional bow, compound bow, crossbow, and rifle. I think this was my 10th or 11th elk tag. Don't think I'll ever get one better than this, so I may just chase cows for the meat after this :^).

So what state were you in? Most elk hunting states that I know of require you to hunt during rifle season if you're using a cross bow. Private land (not high fence) is where those suckers hang if they can... they aren't stupid. We worked our butts off for 6 days in Montana in September before we found the herd.. on private frickin rangeland! All I've got is video I took of the 7x7 herd bull, satellites and cows from about 300 yds.
Congrads on a great bull!

fishm@n, I live and hunt in Colorado. You're right, you do have to use a rifle tag here to hunt with a crossbow. This was on private land where they don't allow rifle hunters, so the bulls that I found there weren't quite so jumpy. There are very few people who hunt with a crossbow here because you have to share the season with rifle hunters. I hunted both private and public land during my season and found this guy on the private land.

Just an update: Initially I was going to get an antler mount on this elk due to lack of funds, but everyone I showed a picture to convinced me to do a full shoulder mount. He didn't score as much as I thought he wouldat first. I scored him @ 329 gross and 317 4/8 net, but for this area, he's a monster. Just a side note (suggestion), if you ever get a chance to bowhunt elk, use a heavy arrow/ bolt. I have lost a cowelk shooting a 500 gr. bolt from this same crossbow (perfect placement, but poor penetration). I've learned that for elk, bolt weight is all-important. The bolt I shot at this bull was 625 gr. It didn't hit any bones that I could see (went between ribs on both sides) so maybe I was a bit light since it didn't completely exit.
