If crossbows are so junk and they cant shoot as far as a compound THEN plz tell me what there is to gain?
More hunters hunting is not all that great of a deal. Allready you have to have privet land or try to find an out of the way place to hunt. With more hunters it will only get worse. Like I said they ones that push the crossbow have SOME THING TO GAIN,90% of the time it will be money not to help hunting as a hole. |

RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
I’m overwhelmed! It’s too bad I have school.
Thanks for the lesson! Go back and look at the differences between the two (compounds/recurves vs crossbows) when concerning hunting situations. Thats what we're talking about here Still curious. have been setting beside him when he has made VERY long shots on yotes 100+ yards. The crossbow is no difrant than the cock lock for a bow.I think if they make it ok to use them we will loose bow hunting as it is. There is people out there that can shoot farther with a 308 than a 50 cal. BUT for the genaral publie the 50 cal is way better. Truth- Compound bows shot alongside with crossbows in the hands of both skilled individuals will shoot groups of arrows at sensible hunting ranges virtually identically. When put side by side those arrow groups to an individual shooting a recurve or longbow shooting wood arrows and no sights, the efficient, realistic hunting range is more than halved. Truth- By their very mechanical nature, compound bows are more strongly related to crossbows than to the alleged real bows such as the familiar recurve or longbow. Truth- Compound bows accessorized with high-tech sights, rests, stabilizers, silencers, carbon arrows, and mechanically triggered releases are more similar to crossbows than to the alleged real bows such as the ordinary recurve or longbow which don’t have any of the abovementioned accessories. Truth- Compound bows are reasonably quieter than crossbows. Truth- Compound Bows have no practical disadvantages as put side by side to crossbows. Lie- The benefit of having a pre-cocked bow as oppose to having to draw a bow in the presence of game presents a huge advantage. In truth, with today's 80% and higher let off rates, a bow hunter hunting with a compound bow could possibly draw their bow and hold their bow at least a full minute before the anticipated target would present itself with a killing shot. Anyone disproving this truth is lying to themselves since they know it’s the truth. |

RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
I got a better bet than that. I'll take YOUR compound having never shot it and spank a crossbow shooter. There appear to be a few on here who need to dig a little deeper into the technology of some of the TOP crossbows. I guarantee by that stupid remark you haven't! You take my compound and I'll take the 10pt crossbow I shot. Wanna put your house title on the line? I would!Ohj geeeeeeeez, quit enough with the scaring little kids tactics. What you fear has NEVER come to pass before, why sould your state be THAT much different ? And honestly, compounds alread do the very thing you fear anyway if you'd just admit it ! Three states out of fifty and I wouldn't even count one of them. How long is your gun season?? Our is NINE days! Do you think it might make a difference in the impact for a state who only has nine days vs a state that has a month for gun hunters? There are so many variables to consider that I dont have time to list them right now. Please get off the "it worked in three states it will work everywhere" kick? It lacks substance! Like I said, you want YOUR easy, you want YOU choice, you want YOUR technology and YOUR charge .......... but dammit if you'll let anyone else have theirs. |
RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
Which leads us to today. Do we expand the definition of archery to include crossbows? I don't want to, but what do I know. What that instantly opens the door for is components for compounds that will hold the bow at full draw, and even more radical products that shatter that first simple definition or archery which 47 states still use. A bow which has a minimum draw weight that must be manually drawn and held. It's why compounds were allowed .. and it is why I feel crossbows should be considered seperate. That was a great response and I quoted the above because I knew if someone answered my questions it would boil down to "what is a bow" and what is "archery" I must and so should everybody, use the dictonary as the final answer as to what a "bow" is. It is very clear and specific. What is stated cannot be disputed "a flexible curved strip of material (wood) with a cord connecting the ends for shooting arrows" and the definition of archery is as follows, "the pratice or art of shooting a bow and arrow" By this definition it would include a crossbow as a "bow" and it's use as "archery" That's not me saying that it's the dictionary. If people want to start changing definitions so be it, I will stick to the facts. Now if the states decide that crossbows are legal to hunt with, in my opinion there should be no question as to what season they should be in and thats the archery season. And I still see no reason how they would be a detriment to the sport of archery. |

1st off most people now days do use a range finder with a crossbow you will surly have the time. 2nd off a 10 to 12 in goup at 100 yards is about 4 tims the avrage compoud shooters range. 3rd you can do away with the compound. I will gladly shoot my stick bow!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4th compounds did change bow hunting and crossbows will only make is worse. 5th if you beleave this i am turly sorry Lie- The benefit of having a pre-cocked bow as oppose to having to draw a bow in the presence of game presents a huge advantage. I guarantee by that stupid remark you haven't! You take my compound and I'll take the 10pt crossbow I shot. Wanna put your house title on the line? I would! How long is your gun season?? So how about this - we've given you all the stats we can on how crossbows have NOT affected archery season. Since your hell bent on believing it MIGHT ......... why ? Just a weird theory, someonthing the P&Y Club does subliminally to their constituants ......... something like that ? Or do you have ANYTHING to base it on other than wives tales, myths and fears ?? I'm waiting - have been for close to 50 pages now ! Because if there are no good reason NOT to allow them ............ why aren't they allowed ? C'mon, surely we're reasonable enough human beings to realize that - right ? You obviously haven't been paying attention!!! I'm all for seperate seasons so EVERYONE can get their charge!! Did you get that this time? I can overFont you you know :D Why a seperate season at all though ? Geeeeez, its been already shown, proven, factual that crossbows in archery season have minimal effects and certainly doesn't lead to cut backs in archery season or bag limits. nd Lord knows we need more hunters, especially bowhunters. So you MUST have something factual to want to keep them out - right ? Something ...... anything ? Anything at all that shows how they'd be a negative impact ? Anything other than a fear, an unfounded hunch backed by wives tales and PBS rhetoric ? 4th compounds did change bow hunting and crossbows will only make is worse. |
RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
datamax I think you are full of it! If you had not any thing to gain you would not shove it down the throt for the rest of the bowhunters. RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
Extra archery hunters are better IMHO and that is the only matter we should debate. I believe in a free society people should be able to use what they want as long as the bottom line is the same. Thirty years of observed facts in Ohio has verified that crossbows and compound bows have:
[ul][*] similar rates of harvest a comparable safety record identical effective range and sensible accuracy a raise in the amount of people hunting during archery season easier to use by women and children[*] [*] [/ul] Buckmaster9 1st off most people now days do use a range finder with a crossbow you will surly have the time. |

compounds did not change bowhunting. Let me gess there is no more deer killed with bows now then befor stick bows. I do not think you are right at all there.the compound did make a big change. datamax plz tell us the real reasion, you are pussing this. buckmaster9 asking crossbows have been legal in ohio for 30 years? If so I would like to know the nifrance in numbers on crossbows to compounds and stick if you know them. Just so you know my uncle is a pice of crap!!! in his 15 yers bow hunting he mite get 1 deer every 2 years. Two years ago he changed to a crossbow. This year he killed 11 deer. I know his hunting skills did not improve. From my point of veiw the cross bow is in no way like a compound or he would only have killed 1 deer this year. |
RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
Compounds were marketed to people who didn't want to learn how to master the finger release, train for months to hold a man's weight bow and align your string without a peep. Your point is? In states where crossbows are not usually accessible, compounds are the easiest ticket to archery season.
1st off most people now days do use a range finder with a crossbow you will surly have the time. 2nd off a 10 to 12 in goup at 100 yards is about 4 tims the avrage compoud shooters range. 3rd you can do away with the compound. No one has even tried to prove that a crossbow has a greater range, greater rate of fire, greater accuracy or greater predicted harvest rate than a compound bow. Before the beginning of the compound, very few archers would have taken shots beyond 15 perhaps 20 yards. Now with the compound, 40, 50 and 60 yard shots are not that unusual. |
RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
O.K. I've read every post and feel the need to jump in. Crossbows are "on average" not as accurate as compounds and I would have no problem if they were allowed during archery season. (And yes, I have shot the Ten Point, it's a great crossbow, but not nearly as accurate as a compound.) Man this thread is long!:D

RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
From the Texas Parks and Wildlife Outdoor Annual:
"Longbows, compound bows, or recurved bows: - must have a 40 pound minimum draw at the time of hunting, when used to hunt turkey and all game anumals other than squirrel. - that are equipped with a device that allows the bow to be locked at full or partial draw are lawful during any season when lawful archery equipment may be used. Crossbow Any person may use a crossbow to hunt game animals or game birds (except migratory game birds) during a general open season or Eastern spring turkey season. Telescopic sights are lawful. ONLY a person with an upper-limb disability may use a crossbow to hunt deer and turkey during the Archery Only Open Season, provided the person, while hunting, has in their immediate possession a physician's statement certifiying the extent of the disability." Seems like anyone wanting to hunt with a crossbow, at least in Texas, is free to do so. By the way, archery season here runs roughly from the first of October to the end of October while the general season, which is open to crossbow hunters, is from roughly the first of November to the first of January with a lot of counties having about a 2 week extended season for does and spikes. Seems plenty sensible and fair. By the way, those 2 fine young hunters could have taken those deer just as easily with a rifle as they did with a crossbow but they couldn't with a recurve OR crossbow. |

RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
quote: I fear that they will attract hunters who do not take the time to get to know their weapons limitations. A lot of gun hunters who only pick up their rifle or shotgun during hunting season will see crossbows as a way around all of the practice that goes into hunting with a compund. A valid concern however its never happened before in AR, OH and GA, has it ? No more so than slob compound shooters, slob recurve shooters and slob gun hunters. Its a wives tale fear - its not reality. How do you know it hasn't happened in those states. I'd like to see your statistics on the percentage of "slob" hunters in each weapon category. You can't show me these stats because they don't exist. However, I guarantee that there is a greater number of lost deer per hunter for those using crossbows than those using compounds. Nor compounds. Geeez man, just go back to October and November right here on this forum and read all the "I missed" threads and " I bloodied one" threads. All compounder shooters buddy I think making another season for crossbows is yet another bad idea. Maybe, I should invent another weapon and we can make a season for that. It's just more stress on our Conservation officers who are already spread too thin. |

RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
I don't have stats and will admit that.
I am basing it on the fact that the xbow has been deemed by you, data and others as a less effective weapon than the compound yet many people out there believe it to be much more effective. This overestimation will lead to greater numbers of lost deer. |
RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
Okay, explain that logic. I'll sit back on this one because your conclusion baffles me. If you are correct in your claim that the xbow is less effective (which I don't doubt you are), these people that think it is more effective are going to pick one up under these false assumptions and end up taking shots at deer from distances beyond the xbow's effective range. Result: wounded deer. |

Alrighty I'll bite. I didn't dare even attemp to read the other posts, so if I repeat what has ben said just ignore me...that's what the wife does.
I've got nothing against cross-bows, but feel they need their own season. Same as a person can't use a rifle during ML so should a person not use a x-bow during archery. Wanna split hairs? there should be longbow/selfbow and compound season and there should be in-line and flint lock season. But there isn't. I am not going top cry about it the way some folks do up here in KY where its all about to happen. The release I use is the same one I type with, no matter if its on my compound or selfbow. The whole game has changed in the last 20 years and I am uindecided if it is for the better or the worse. trigger releases and triggers on x-bows are similar. The insane let-off on compounds is close to the non-existant pressure felt when a x-bow is ready to fire. One negative thing about x-bows: I'm watching a division amongst hunters over them and personal negative is that the first story about a poacher I ever heard as a small boy involved a x-bow. |

RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
I have drawn my bow and shot arrows at deer. I have held that draw for quite a while to do that before, too, and still made an accurate shot. I have missed because of a faulty swinging sight on one occasion, and on others because the deer simply jumped out of the arrow's path. Never has my drawing the bow been a factor in getting a shot at a deer. And crossbows are not any faster-shooting than compound bows, so a deer "jumping the string" is still a very likely scenario.
The abouve statment is wrote for some joker in FL. Any man that has only missed 2 deer in his hunting time is not much of a bow hunter anyway.I sure do not want a man that would right this speeking for me. I read his hole article with my wife reading over my sholder.WE laughed our but off. The man the wrote how he liked guns better than a bow. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm maby he should just use the gun and never bow hunt :} There is so much crap in his article what a joke. The wife said if they made it legal to use a crossbow she would stop useing the compound. Her quote[ I could shoot 40 yards eazy with the crossbow, with my compuond I am lucky to shoot 20]. Even my wife could tell there is a big difrance in xbows to any real bows.I think it just comes down to LAZY people wanting to hunt in a more LAZY way. As I stated befor my uncle could not kill crap till he got his XBOW now this year he killed more deer in 1 year than he killed in his hole life. I think the xbow may have something to do with that. And for the guy That can not read. NO WHERE DID I EVER SAY YOU COULD KILL A DEER AT 100 YARDS. SILentassassin name calling is for kids. plz readbefor you run your finger off :}~ |

RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
Did a little search to see if there was someone who could exlain (or put into words) the difference between compounds and crossbows better than myself.
Found this... When asked what the difference is between a crossbow and a conventional bow, I refer to a report by Norb Mullany a professional engineer who is recognized as the leading authority on the physics of bows and arrows. Anyone who has picked up an archery magazine throughout the years and read Norb's performance reports on archery equipment knows why he's very respected in his field. Mr. Mullany states, "The hand held bow has one characteristic that distinguishes it from a crossbow or any type of firearm. The internal ballistics are a function of the shooter, his or her physical geometry and capabilities, shooting form, consistency and reaction to stress and trauma. In the crossbow and firearms, the internal ballistics are fixed. The action of the shooter in triggering a release of energy does nothing more than initiate a process that is consistent and repetitive. The hand held bow is different. Every action of the shooter contributes something either positive or negative to the interior ballistic process. As the interior ballistics vary, so do the exterior ballistics. Shooting the hand held bow and arrow is much more complicated than aiming a fixed system of ballistics and touching off the energy discharge. The total energy to draw, hold and release the bow must come directly and unassisted from the shooters muscle power". |
RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
It flabbergasts me the attempt these guys are making to differentiate their modern compound from the crossbow as far as level of difficulty in mastering it and then they just gloss over the huge distinction between their weapon and the traditional bow which most archery seasons (length and so forth) were based upon. The reason bow seasons were tolerable in first place before the gun seasons and the amount of time the archer had to hunt was based first and foremost upon the aspect that traditional bows were a ***** to learn and master. Not true today. I am still waiting for you anti-crossbow hunters to tell us why those dissimilarities matter if the expected harvest rates, range, accuracy and rate of fire are the same or worse for crossbows and the learning curve is so close compare to that of a recurve so as not to statistically matter. Those who try to make differences are the compound guys due to selfishness, not reason.
