Went out yesterday evening to finish cutting some trails with a weedwacker. Was well doused in Deepwoods Off and even spilled some premix on my boots filling up the wacker.
1/2 hour into weedwacking, sweating my butt off, I look up and see 2 does and a nub about 40 yards away - DOWNWIND!. I'm working my way tword them with the weedwacker going and they just stood there. Now they HAD to have smelled me - Deepwoods Off, Gasoline Premix, Wacker Exhaust & Human Sweat. They were not there when I first got to the site, so they must have come out after I started working. Why no reaction?
I end up passing them at a distance of 25 yards, and they just stand there browsing in the alfalfa watching and chewing. All looked very healthy, 1 of the does was very heavy sided, a big girl.
They were within 35 yards of where I am planning to put my ground blind (next to a hayroll). Is this good news or bad? I don't think that they were spooked, but eventually they did wander off.

You didn't pose a threat to them. You weren't trying to be quiet, you weren't trying to sneak closer to them. They are more than likely very used to farm equipment and farmers.
Now if you were in the field being quiet and jumped out at them when they got there, they would have been gone.

They know that mowing and stuff makes it easyer to get to the tender stuff. Sounds like you need to fire off the wacker and hang it about 20 yards out, than sit and wait.
Hurry up and wait.

justin deer are a lot smarter than given credit for, I have seen deer barely move while fertilizer was being spread, while wood was being cut with a chainsaw, etc. they know who to avoid and when. Heck I have even heard of deer heading in the direction of a chain saw because they know once the cutting is over with there may be some munchies for them.
