Default 3D SHOOTS: WHATS YOUR THOUGHTS

YESTERDAY I WENT TO THE FINAL 3D SHOOT OF THIS YEAR. ALL TOGETHER THERE WERE 4, STARTING IN MAY. I FELT AS THOUGH IT WAS VERY EASY. THE 20 YARD SHOTS WERE ALL IN THE OPEN AND THERE WERE NO DISTRACTIONS. THE 40 YARD SHOTS,HOWEVER, WERE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE. IF YOU WERE TO ATTEND A 3D SHOOT HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT SET UP.

I AM OF THE OPINION THAT THE 20 YARD SHOT IS THE MOST COMMON SO IT SHOULD BE, FOR PRACTICE PURPOSES, THE MOST CHALLENGING. 40 YARD SHOTS FOR WHITE TAIL ARE, IN MY OPINION, NOT A GOOD PERCENTAGE SHOT.

HEY WHAT DO YOU THINK?

BY THE WAY THE 3D SHOOT WAS HELD BY MIDMICHEE BOWMEN AND IT REALLY WAS FUN. 30 TARGETS GREAT TIME

wish I could add an opinion, but I can't. I was suppose to go to my first ever today, but had to work. UHHHH! Everyone tells me that they are a blast. The one I was going to go to today is setup along a river valley, so that one would have be pretty fun.

I think 3D shoots are fantastic practice for hunting situations. You get one shot at an unknown distance. Now I realize your shooting for scores on the targets and if quartered a certain way, the best score isn't necessarily the best killing shot however it forces you to pick a spot and shoot to the best of your ability. Again, one shot at an unknown distance. 3D shoots will make a better shooter out of anyone as long as that person takes it seriously and thinks about the shot before and after.

After you've attended 3D shoots all summer and your in your tree and that buck/animal steps out broadside to you and your drawing your bow and all of a sudden you realize you've seen this shot all summer long and now it's just a matter of picking a hair and sending the arrow through the mark....

3D shoots are what you make of them. You can be competitive and learn alot and you can shoot for fun or hunting scenerios only and you can still learn alot from them.

I think all 30 targets should be setup for the optimal hunting situation, at the same time making them challenging at all yardages.

I like the kind of shoot you describe, except it's more fun when there are brush or trees in the way and you have to find a shot from the stake.

I like to see at least some stakes set so there are problems to be solved before the shot can be taken. Maybe every third shot or so, make it where you have to kneel, sit, squat down, lean one way or another to find an opening for your arrow. Where even standing on different sides of the stake would totally change a shot from impossible to easy.

That's the way we set a lot of our targets at our club. Shooters come away from the round with good knowledge of how they shoot in a variety of situations and at a variety of yardages. Our attitude is, if you want to know how you shoot while standing on your hind legs using your very best shooting form, at a target sitting out in wide open spaces with a carefully manicured shooting lane, then stay on the practice range or go shoot a field archery course.

But, our club is made up of mostly knothead bowhunters. Only a couple of our members are hardcore tournament shooters. We go out to have fun, not to have cutthroat competition.

I think 3-d shoots are great fun and a uniques form of archery competetion. I think sometimes they try so hard to make the long shots too hard. I agreeI think the 20 yards shots should have more in the way to get the shot there! at 40 yards you need a little give & take for your average guy that isn't Randy Ulmer. I think the real challenge is setting the range so it is hard but not so hard that your average hunter destroys a ton of arrows and stops coming back due to the expense.

3 D shoots are great fun and great practice. For the competition shooter, the ranges I have went to were, in general, set up well enough so perfect scores were rare, but do-able.

I have found that at some ranges a few of the shots are set up way too hard and some ranges are set up way too easy. Alot of this is due to the competitors that shoot there. When retriving arrows, shooters shouldnt move any debris or break any twigs on the way to the targets, but it does happen. Ever noticed how some of the older ranges seem so wide open? And some of the brand new ranges are way too thick?

The only drawback for me, as a hunter just out for the practice (and fun), is that I am not very good at guessing yardages. Sure, I guess close enough to be able to hit the targets, but under hunting situations I always know the yardages. From pre-scouting and pre-planning, I already have yardages marked at the trees I plan to hunt so making that shot is alot easier (unless buck fever kicks in ) than when shooting 3-D targets at all unknown distances.

As it's been said though, I believe this is the best practice there is for getting ready for the season. It's also alot of fun shooting with your buddies to see how well you can do compared to them, and the field of shooters.

Our season opens in 6 more days, so I'm stoked! Hope all of get that buck of your dreams!

Dead center X-ring, Moonge! Hard and challenging is one thing. Suicidal is another.

There is a local club here that puts on what they call a 'bowhunter extreme' shoot every year, and they do make it extreme. I go every chance I get, when my body is up to handling the heat. It's a lot of fun because it's very much like things were in the early days. Nostalgia counts for something, ya know. Excellent opportunity to get rid of those old beater arrows and have an excuse to buy new ones.

I used to go almost every weekend when I lived up North but after moving back home you can't find a range. Can't believe a town the size of Stillwater,OK doesn't have one. I don't think you can beat a good 3D shoot for practice.

lol thats odd most of em where i shoot are in teh 30-40 range not a under under 30 i dont think, i think there should be fifteen up to 40 and maybe a couple moving targets, how bout a couple no shoot targets? that is my idea set up a range and you get points on how you handle the situation they maybe set a target on a track and somebody pulls it and you have to wait for teh right oppurunity or maybe pass a target all together
