I now know why I don't like watching hunting shows. It's because I was watching them to learn something instead of watching them for pure entertainment.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
What I have yet to hear about on this board are the time that I have seen on the videos where better than 80% of the arrow is sticking out of the deer (on the side where the arrow hit).

Good point Justin, and it has been mentioned here. That also bothers me quite a bit since what we are going after are pass throughs. I have seen many double lung shots on videos lately that are not complete passthroughs. I can't understand how that can not be a priority by everyone.

I don't know where the "I can't get a big buck so I can't stand to see these pompous a-holes pass on what would be a trophy for me" attitude comes from. I guess it's similar to class-envy.

I've taken some nice deer and a very common assumption is that I have some pent-up honey hole where the deer do nothing but suck clover honey and wait for me to come kill them. Truth is four of my six mounts already had holes in them from other hunters or poachers.

I sure don't want to watch a video showing some guys sitting in a stand for hours waiting for a deer to show up. I want to see that big rack bobbing through the bush and get a good long look at him after he's down.

I think a lot of the hard luck, "never see nothing" hunters out there would be shocked at the size of some of the bucks living in their area. They're in there. You just have to be good enough to find then see them.

Bottom line, knock it if you want to, but it just sounds like whining to me.

If my son were to ask me why we don't see deer like these where we hunt, my answer would be similar to the answer I would give him as to why we don't have a monster truck parked in the driveway. Maybe someday i'll find a really good deal on that monster truck, and maybe someday i'll see a buck like those in the video. Until then, i'll keep hunting and thinking "maybe someday".
I watch the shows. Maybe I learn something....maybe I don't. Myabe I just watch them so I know what trophy deer look like. And yes, I can definitely admit I am jealous!

Good point. The thing is, I see as many if not more 'big rack only' hunters whining than I do the "everyday run of the mill" hunters, especially about not being able to kill "trophies". I'm sure all states and areas vary widely from one to the next, but what you said for the most part is true, the big ones are out there but many "trophy hunters" don't want to do what it takes to get one. So they would rather pass laws that make it easier for them to see and get a big one. I was always under the impression that trophies were just that, trophies?! And shouldn't it take some work to earn those deer, isn't that what makes it so special? If an area or state is having basically no mature deer shot from year to year, then the obvious would state that something needs to be done differently, and those aren't the areas I am referring to. I can only speak for Indiana and the areas I hunt, and there is certainly no shortage of big bucks in Indiana. But there are still the "trophy hunters" here preaching QDM as the only way to go because they don't want to spend the time and energy it takes to find one(not all of them, just a select few, and the majority whining are younger hunters that don't feel they need to work for it). They are here (and most other places), all you have to do is go to a check station on opening day of gun season and you will have all the proof you need. Granted, most of those guys "luck" into those big ones, but they are still huge and there are plenty more out there.

Read alot but don't post much. I'm 43 and i've been hunting since I was 10. 33 years and 15 bucks. Biggest is a 10 that doesn't even score a 100. But I love him. If I had the money and the time I would be right there with Jordan because it's a dream for me to get one of those monsters. I watch it because its entertainment and nothing else. I learn from reading and experience. I enjoy reading about some guy who works hard for a 150 class deer more than watcing Bill, but I'll still watch... Like other people have said " to each his own"" Good luck to all this year and please give your thoughts to the families and freinds of the 9/11 victims this week. It will make all the rest a little less important..

Good point Shortdraw, and, as much as I can't believe I am sayin this, GREAT point Wolfen

These areas do exist. There are area's EVERYWHERE that have lots of "Monster Bucks", but, too many hunters are willing to wait for one. Alot of people call me a liar when I tell them how the average deer I see in my hunting grounds is in the 120" range, and, I have seen several over the 170" mark. People say "Your in Pennsylvania, there are no big bucks in Pennsylvania. The key to it all is that you HAVE to let the deer grow to get them big. If a guy is out for meat and shoots a spike, AWSOME, I would be happy for him, but, on the other hand, if a guy goes out hunting and says "I am going after a MONSTER buck", but, he shoots a little basket rack 8-pointer, then, it is his own dang fault.

These areas aren't fenced in, and, these guys hunt their butts off for these deer.

Bill Jordan, oooooppsss JERDAN may be a little arrogant sounding, but, he is probablly more irratated than angry. That guy does ALOT for this sport, but yet, there are tons of hunters out there who entirely hate the guy, ONLY because they don't see the caliber deer that he does. Just think, where would hunting be without Realtree camo, and, Team Realtree bringing in TONS of new young hunters.

As far as the "not getting passthroughs", passthroughs are NICE, but NOT NESSICARY. I saw Bill Jordan put about 7-8" of arrow into a nice buck on the film, that was it, and you guys wouldn't believe the amount of blood that thing spilled. Also, there were alot of views on the Monster Bucks Vol. X that showed deer falling over and dieing.

I think another thing that you guys are forgetting is that there IS a time limit on these hunts.

Lets say that one of us went out and had a succesfull hunt. Now, how long do you think the film would have to be to incorporate EVERYTHING that you guys want into the film. Lets see, you got atleast a good 6 hours of film for the scouting, maybe a good 8 hours on stand before the deer comes, you get the shot on film, then, you spend a good hour tracking the deer, not to mention the wait after the shot. Plus, you gotta talk about the deer after the recovery and you gotta talk about what skills helped, and everything else.... You are looking at something like a 24 hour film for ONE hunt. It isn't logical.

How many people are going to be interested in sitting down for 6 hours to watch a hunting dvd with only ONE kill on it???

These shows are done for entertainment, to promote the sport of hunting, and, how many newbies would learn atleast something from them???

What alot of you are failing to realize is that you can't judge all hunters by the members on here. The members on this board are INCREDIBLY hardcore hunters, we have a passion unsurpassed, but, you get that little 12 year old who buys the video to watch before his first hunt. This will pump him up, show him the joy of the sport, and, let him know that being a safe, ethical hunter, and having a good time is what this sport is REALLY about.

Plus, Team Realtree pushes QDM, that right there shows they care about the sport, and the deer.

Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet

I find it odd that there are that many people on this BBS who can get their undies in a bundle because someone makes videos of hunting big bucks.
P.S. If you don't learn ANYTHING watching these videos that can help you....your not paying much attention.
