I plant on starting a food plot this spring in a clearing in the forest surrounded by thick cover. This area is about 1/4 acre in size and I have yet to do a pH test but the soil seems fertile and moist. This area also receives moderate amounts of sunlight throughout the day. Any suggestions or experiences with this type of setup? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys!!!

where are you from?
It depends on your area and what kind of winter you have there.
Also makes a differece on what types of food sources are sourounding your land.

I am from Western Maryland. The primary food source on my land would be acorns.

If the soil is good my suggestion would be a blend like Whitetail institute Powerplant. It's a blend of sunflowers, beans, peas and some wheats. I tried clover and this last year and the powerplant got ALL the attention until it died off in the fall. The area will need at least 6 hours of sunlight a day or more.

I had deer in this plot at all times of the day and night. It's high protein and you'll get the most amount of forrage with this or a similar product since the plot will be limited to 1/4 acre.

Thanks for the advice. However the site that I have chosen does not receive 6 hours of sunlight a day. I would say around 4. I am thinking about using the Plot Spike Shade Blend this spring. Have you had any experience with this particular brand of seed? I am also consindering using Plot Saver since my sight is only about 1/4-1/2 acre in size. I want to make sure my plot will be able to survive the first month or so to ensure that it will last until fall bow season. Do you think this is a good idea? I've only tried the whitetail institute products. Did you post this question in the "wildlife management forum"? The guys there got me started on the right foot(alot of them are well educated in growing stuff). I'd be suprised if there isn't someone there who hasn' t tried the product. They will also be able to give suggestions of other types of seeds to try.

With only 4 hours of sun light you should be able to grow a plot if you choose you seed well. I think the plot saver might be a good idea because of the limited amount of light and how long it may take for the plot to get established.
