A papaloma is another name for a wart. It may be one, but I might expect to see more on the head or neck. It may be difficult to tell if it is ok to eat the meat or not. I would check out the lymph nodes of the neck (on either side behind the angle of the jaw) and the ones at the bottom of the neck just in front of the shoulder joint. If they look normal, you can probably eat the deer. You may want to gut her and run her by a large animal vet and get his opinion. Might even send it in for biopsy. You might also show the picture to the game warden in your area. He/she is probably aware of what might be on deer in that area.
Here is a link of a picture of deer warts. Scroll down and click on DEER WARTS: http://www.bandeerbaiting.org/library.html
Bottom line is that if you don't find any other masses on her or on her internal organs and she is in good shape, I think she is probably ok to eat. FYI: I am a veterinarian.

Thanks for all the information and opinions. If I get a shot at her next year I'll have someone inspect it before thinking about eating it for sure. I'm not real concerned about taking it out of the deer herd instantly, just because it seems perfectly healthy other than the growth or wart. Thanks again for the information and opinions. If the growth gets larger in the future and I get more photos I'll post them.

I shot a doe yaes ago that had a growth on it like that on it's hind quarter. Not quite that big. I asked a DNR fella I know what it was and he said the same thing, paploma(sp). He said it is very common and it does not effect the meat at all and is not catchy if you touch it. I ate the deer and, my wife may argue, have had no ill effects!!

I believe that Shedhead is right about this , and I've done some research on this type of thing and they say that it doesn't bother the meat and that the deer is safe to eat .It may not look good but it won't hurt you.

New Pictures, whatever was growing on this does face as fallen off. It's eye is also gone so now I'm not sure what it was once again. If it was a papaloma would it take the eye?

I got something like that growing on me - it's HUGE! I don't exactly want to detail where, but I'm wondering if we're eating too much venison in this house?
