RE: Necessaties in the stand?
It all depends on how well you know your area. If you know it well you don't need a compass, gps, etc.
I travel light. I take a flash light, binoculars, knife and field dressing equipment, food, drinks and maybe a cover scent or two. That's about it.
I used to take everything under the sun and found that I never needed it.

RE: Necessaties in the stand?
Best advice:
bring very little gear. If you have it you will feel obligated to mess around with it. I used to bring a backpack with all kinds of crap. Last year I reduced down to stuff that will mostly fit in my pockets
Bow & 3 arrows with a small quiver to hang on the tree
Thin Rope to pull bow up to stand
safety harness (! always !)
Knife
Field dressing rubber gloves (cabelas $4 for a few sets)
Plastic bottle for piss
Water
Bow hook for hanging the bow next to your shooting arm
Small set of Binoculars
Thats it. no noise no fuss. Nothing will scare animals quicker than the sound and smell of unneeded gadgets.

I agree with the above except for the pee bottles, deer dont care about piss, in fact Deer andDeer Hunting Mag. done some research on the subject and found that human pee in a scrape atracted more deer than deer pee. I have had deer feed within inches of where i relieved myself and they never gave it a thought, dont take my word for it,do your own research.(unless you like peeing in bottles)

One of the most forgotten things was not mentioned, toilet paper!!!! With out fail if you have none with you, you will have to go. If you have a roll you will rarely if ever have to go! Another thing is the toilet paper is excellent for marking blood trails.
Nick mentioned the #1 thing if you are hunting from a stand.
venison4all covered the rest, the lighter the better.
trapperdave is correct when it comes to piss, deer do not spook at human urine.
One other thing was left off, extra batteries for the flashlight.
