It all depends on how well you know your area. If you know it well you don't need a compass, gps, etc.

I travel light. I take a flash light, binoculars, knife and field dressing equipment, food, drinks and maybe a cover scent or two. That's about it.

I used to take everything under the sun and found that I never needed it.
