Several years back, I was scouting a farm near my home in SW Ohio and in the course of scouting I started talking to the farmer. He told me about a deer that had got caught in a tree near one of his corn fields. Poor thing thought he was just going to get something to eat.

Well sure enough there was a nice little 8 pointer with his rack caught in the branches of a tree. It seems that when he jumped the fence he got his antlers caught in the over-hanging branches. His front legs were several inches off the gound (maybe 6-8" or so) and I assume he must have hung there for several days and just starved to death. He put up a struggle from the signs of hair on the fence and marks on the ground.

Kinda wierd how natural selection works.

Anyway, your pictures reminded me of that deer I saw about 10 years ago.

I agree mostly with longrifle1000! It looks to me as if the buck tripped while comming down the hill these pictures took place on, his left antler
caught the smaller tree spinning him around and possibly breaking his neck! If he was running from something the force would more than likely broken his neck. I believe this because if you look at the topography of the surrounding area a buck would not be tall enough to rub that tree from the downhillside and rubbing from the uphill side seems unethical. besides there is little evidence on the smaller tree to justify that rubbing had taken place. simply catching an antler in the tree while passing by seems shotty to me also because deer have an uncanny sense of their surroundings ( for instance deer bolting away in the dark and never touching a thing) second I find it unbelievable that a buck such as this one would not have finangled his way out if he had the power to do so! That is just my two cents however

The buck may have broken his kneck, but it was not on impact, as Antlergetter said( the ground was dug up from a struggle to get out ), as well the tree shows the same signs, this is not possible because when the kneck is broken motor functions sease! Therfor if the deer broke his kneck on inpact there would be no signs of a struggle.

The deer was obviously making a rub and got jammed in. Either that or Elvis put some peanut butter in the crotch of the tree and he got stuck tryin to lick it out.

I was just wondering why the horns are in different positions in the first two photos. In the first photo both (left and right) antlers are in front of that little tree. but in the second photo only the top (left) antler is in front, the other is behind. I was just wondering how much the deer was moved for the different photos?

Wow look at the third pic it looks like his hooves tore that tree up pretty good trying to get free...That is a shame though. Nature taking one of her weird courses to thin the herd.
