Went to my brothers house for a weekend of hunting at a new area we had never been.
We get out of the truck and see that the woods at least a 1/2 mile from the road and the farmer allows NO vehicles anywhere but the street. We pack up and head for the trees.
This guy has TONS of corn still standing and we pass more then a couple deer on the way in. When we finally reach the woods I go left and he goes right around the corner. I realize 1/2 way down the row that there are a bunch of deer in the back corner and if I keep walking they are gonna bolt. I stop and check the area and see a big ground scrape a couple yards ahead of me. I decide to climb a tree about 15 yards into the woods seeing I can only shoot a doe so hopefully one will wander down the woods and not go straight into the corner. It gets light and the deer at the back corner all go directly into the corner
foiling my little plan. I sit back and enjoy the sunrise on a chilly morning.
7:40 I hear a rustle in the trees and think it is one of the 1,000 squirrels I have heard so far.............it isn't. A buck comes out behind me and walks right under my tree on his way to tend the ground scrape. Very business-like he paws at the scrape.....toungues the branch hanging above and stands there PERFECTLY broadside at 15 yards as if he KNOWS I already used my buck tag [8D] Well it was fine entertainment anyways.
The afternoon comes and not much is going on in my area when my cell phone starts to vibrate.......UH OH!!! That only means one thing.........my brother got one
I answer the phone and he tells me he hit a doe and she is still alive about 30 yards in front of him..........hmmmmmm. While he is on the phone with me he says she gets up and starts to leave...........double hmmmmmm. I convince him to stay put until I get there and be patient. We will solve the mystery when I get there. I get down and go help my bro.
When I get to him I ask where she was when he shot her........he directs me about 10 yards away from his tree but I see no blood and no hair and no arrow. He tells me the path she took and where she was laying. As he directs my steps I find his arrow. Front half covered in stomach matter and the back half in nice bright red blood.......the plot thickens. I get to where he saw her last and there is plenty of blood on the ground and surrounding saplings. I tell my brother to get down and start asking him what EXACTLY happened. He says he hit her farther back then he wanted because she was quartering towards him......OK guts on arrow solved. Then he says she went 30 yards and layed in front of him for 1/2 hour before getting up and leaving........NOT GOOD.
I am really torn at this point because the amount and color of blood makes me think she is done for.........but the hit description and her reaction tell me to wait. Then my brother hits me with a nice little nugget of info he assumed I knew........he says she didn't LAY down.........she walked 30 yards and CRASHED down trying to get up and couldn't and then crashed down again after she tried to walk off. OK.........let's go get her. She didn't even go another 40 yards. Her white belly was visible after about 10 steps
His shot was back like he said but he caught a major artery because she was FULL of blood. No lung, no liver, no heart...........don't know if it is considered the abdominal aorta in deer but that is what he must have clipped for her to get so groggy after only 20-30 yards. Can't figure out how she lived so long if he cut her main line though.
Oh well.......no matter. She is on her way to the freezer either way.
That Fred Bear TRX has killed 3 deer in 3 years now.

One more deer falls to the dreaded unshootable contraption known as the Whisker Bisquit

Just finished cutting up the meat and filling the freezer.
We are off to a pretty good start this year.
I am very happy for my brother because when he started out in archery he was using poor equipment and was neither efficient or happy with it. Ever since I sold him my bow (gave should be a better term
) he has really dedicated himself to become a good bowhunter...........and he has taken 2 deer in 2 years now.
