Taz dont be scared away! use your hunting bow its the best practice there is. the guys they are talking about make up maybe 5 % of the people i shoot with and have been around. the ibo tournaments are differnt but a weekend shoot a a club is nothing like that. its fun and you can build some great friendships out of it and maybe even a few hunting and fishing buds!

I tend to agree with the last post. 3D shooting started as a way to practice for hunting situations...and it should have stayed that way...in my opinion.
To answer your initial question....I think that there are ideal characteristics for each type of bow on paper...but there is nothing that says you can't use a bow that would be more ideally suited for 3D for hunting instead.
In my mind, a 3D bow has to be relatively longer in axle to axle length to create the most stable shooting platform possible. Though a 3D's bow brace height shouldn't be extremely short and thus very critical to shoot it can still be lower than a typical hunting bow because on the 3D range you are under somewhat controlled conditions....which allow you to concentrate more on form, etc....
A 3D bow can be heavier in overall mass weight..again, to provide a more stable shooting platform. The heavier mass weight soaks up nervous "twitches" better. Though this might be beneficial in a hunting situation as well it is then at a cost to ease of carrying to and from your stand as well as when tracking the deer.
A 3D bow is generally set up more for speed and less for the noise/vibration level of the bow or the ability to shoot broadheads accurately and/or with attention to KE/Momentum issues.
Hope I didn't ramble too much.

TAZMAN: They are right you know. I was throwing a little dirt on the serious 3D'r. You can have a blast and you'll see all levels of competency. You'll hear arrows rattle off trees and screams of HOLY......! It's really good training. I have shot so many times in my yard I can't find a spot I don't instantly know the range. There's always uphill, downhill, cross gully, wooded, open..... all kinds of shots that can effect range estimation. It is really FUN. Years ago I shot tournaments every week from March through August just to get ready for hunting season. It'll make you a better shot and you'll learn something from someone whos better.(and he will be there)

OK.... here are a couple of guys shooting at a 3D shoot some of us members got together for last year. We were horsing around... JUST a little bit. That's PA Droptine with the "Tree Shot" on this Pope and Young Sapling. That's DT holding a 6 foot picnic table umbrella for me to block the sun glare and wind.

Dave, if ya wanna block the glare, make DT put on a hat, fer cryin' out loud!! Glad you took the opportunity to raise the ire of the open class instead of me having to do it. They get kinda peeved at me. But then I don't throw dirt on 'em. I chunk rocks.

TAZMAN: The tree didn't score very well. I shot a bigger one the year before when a bunch of us got together up near York, PA. It was a real shot. There were 3 of us shooting in the group. This target was maybe 35 yards or something like that. You had to thread it and DTs first arrow side swiped a tree and ended up where you see it. If you notice the target he shot another and all 3 of us had a good shot. I'm not saying who won the trophy. I'll just say I got presented the back end of a horse. I'll get even next time. The umbrella was clowning and plain Tom Foolery.
P.S. Now here's a real Pope and Young McKenzie Oak for you.

It sounds like 3D may be going the way of sporting clays, which I quit shooting. The shots became more and more ridiculous. You're presented with shots you'd never take while hunting. I guess I'll find out soon enough as I plan to try 3D this spring. And summer if I can endure.

Every time I see that pic I have to laugh. You look sooooooo much bigger than me in the pic. I weigh in at 215 [give or take a few].
Easy 26 yard shot... simple right? Set the scope and aim for the sapling since it surrounded the 12 ring. BANG...! bad idea.
You and Eric won the Dead-a** last awards... and Paully had me when he convinced me to put cold water onto the scope lense. Bad idea number two!
Fun shoot... too bad it rained the entire time... but stopped as soon as we left the course... just our luck. You will have to come up again or maybe when I make the next trip down we will find a place to shoot. Paul is making the trip back to the club as soon as my Darton gets rid of the flu.
Funny pics... I like the umbrella pic the best. Anything to ZING the S........ L.......... O........... W........ wanna be's.
40 targets? We don't have time for you to take ten minutes.... JUST SHOOT ALREADY!! That's it... It's on now!
I use a scope... bino's... and anything else... but never take more than 30 seconds. Anything longer is cutting into my lunch time.
