3D versus hunting

Okay I keep reading about my 3D bow and my hunting bow, except for all the extra accesories for 3D are there any major differences between the two? Minor differences?

Taz man I personally shoot the bow I intend on hunting with. This keeps my senses to the bow keen. Which I truly believe is necessary. Isn't that really what most of us shoot 3D for? To keep in tune with our bow and our form!

I don't do much of it anymore, but I've always used my hunting rig. In hunting the targets taste better. In 3D a bad shot is soon forgotten. In hunting... you remember a bad shot 20 years later. If you're around me... a bad shot in 3D is grounds for a little razzing. In hunting.... I'll cry with you. Yup, they're pretty close otherwise.

So I assume that there is no difference then? Lord I hate assuming! We know what that does!LOL From all the talk I heard of 3D shooting and what each guy was using that there was differences.

RE: 3D versus hunting

Well Taz: For the die hard 3D'er they do tend to get carried away and have all kinds of neat toys. They also take the stuff VERY serious. I mean, some of them won't say 2 words in a round. They all have "their" tricks. One guy shoots super light skinny arrows to cut down on effects of wind, make them fly faster and flatter etc etc etc. Supposedly he's going to have a bigger margin for distance ranging. The guy beside him will go with the biggest fattest shaft he can find..... supposedly to catch more lines and therefore score higher. They both sport pretty little scopes on their sights. They both take 10 minutes to get off a shot. They stand and stare, psyche themselves up, estimate, fidgit with their sight, estimate again, fidgit with their site some more. Adjust it, look over the bow from top to bottom, take precisely 11.8 seconds(has to do with earth rotation or something) to snap on their release. Oh yeh, they carry 3 or 4 kinds including some that won't go off on purpose and some that go off if you think about it. So after 15 minutes(plus or minus) they finally get off that shot on a bus from the 18 yard stake. So you have to go with this routine for another 30-40 targets. Pack a lunch and a sleeping bag. Did I mention your binos, little animal cards, arrow lube, and of course an umbrella to break the prevailing wind. Yeh, I know, you wonder where all that foul wind can come from.

RE: 3D versus hunting

Good comments, I especially like what David had to say.

I think if you look at 3D as a competition, a flat shooting bow (light arrows etc.) will minimize the effects of range estimation errors so that can be a good thing for your scores. If you're competing, shot placement is (scoring wise) according to the rings, if your practicing for the hunt wouldn't you want to go for the double lung etc. in which placement will vary with the angle or position of the target.
While hunting, I always make use of my rangefinder when on stand (before the action starts) so that's when I'll be minimizing the possibility of range errors and can therefore shoot a more forgiving (slower) bow and a heavier arrow. The technology is available and I really don't have any excuses for wounding an animal; I'd hate for David to have to see me cry.
I think it all depends on your approach to 3D. You might just tune for a light arrow and then a heavier arrow before you begin hunting, using the same bow. Or you might use two different bows and the last couple of shoots of the season go to the hunting setup.
These are just my thoughts on it Taz. Then I read David's other comment and now I'm wondering which guy I'll be.? He's funny.

WOOOOOOW after reading David commentary I think I will stay away from 3D events, sounds like some serious stuff!!! Do they take into account sun spots and the tide?

I used to have those cute little arrows set up on my huntin bow in the summer, swithched back to the heavy ones for huntin. Speed is everything to the 3-d folks, less penality for estimating distance wrong.

I did learn a lot about shooting though. Funny thing about them 3-d targets is that they don't duck.
