IMO late October is a great time to be rattleing. The bucks are anticipating the rut and looking for there first does of the year. I'm pretty sure if Mr. Dominant hears some sparing going on he'll be in to investigate.
Start with some gentle sparing and then gradually work them antlers a little harder.

rattling late october is perfect...i can't though for 4 days because we have the doe only t zone hunt in our county, even for bowhunters...so im trading in my mathews for a musky rod...hopefully the does will all get pushed to our land with all the bucks..come back home and arrow one..as far as rattling goes, i like to start out rubbing on a tree, and then some grunts and light sparring just in case he's right there...then i wait about 25 mins and give some grunts, rub on teh tree a little, and go all out..GL
