In any event, the golf ball analogy was a good one. I just happen to have one sitting on my desk, which measures 1 5/8" diameter...
I suspect the front tip of the head is pulling some tissue in with it when it penetrates, then the 4 blades are slicing and dicing, accounting for the hole being larger than the heads stated diameter...
