Seeing how their is a post about trophy or nice deer depending on if it was killed with bow or gun. i thought i would through this out here. Would it be more of a trophy to kill a 160 class buck at 20 yards with a compound all decked out with everything or taking the same deer with a recurve/long bow with no sites at the same distance. Would it be just a nice deer taking it with compound and thought of as a trophy with a recurve/long bow. I thank it would be more of a trophy taking it with a recurve/long bow and it would be just a nice deer if takin with compound.

Well, having weighed in on the previous post you mentioned in defense of the originator, I'll add my two cents to this one as well.

Yes, in my opinion it would be more of a 'trophy'. Likewise, if it was taken with a spear, more of a 'trophy' than with a long bow. Take it with a knife, more of 'trophy' than with a spear. Wrestle it to the ground and break it's neck, better trophy than with a knife. Or you can pull a Davy Crockett and 'grin it' into surrendering and falling on it's own antlers.

My obvious opinion is that the more primitive you get, the greater the accomplishment. The greater the accomplishment, the greater the trophy.

Some people would only consider it a trophy if you killed it with your bare hands.

If that deer was killed by a 9 year old his first day in the woods with his father on a cool winter morning with nobody around but the two of them it would be a huge trophy for both. However if the same deer was shot by someone in pike county Illinois who owns an outfitting company and has 30 deer score over 160 hanging on his wall then it's probably just another day in the woods. I don't care what it's shot with as long as it's memorable, that's a trophy to me.

Some day I hope to be good enough with a stick bow to make that happen and if I did it would certainly be more of a trophy to me. As I had originally posted in responce to fieldmouse:

I hunt for myself. Personally I get more out of my hunts as the more primative my gear gets. That is why I'm a bow hunter. Some day I'll become a traditional bowhunter for what I consider to be the ultimate challenge.

I'm not so sure that that's legal. I would think they'd be poachers.

I think it all depends on what the circumstances are - how hard did you hunt, how much grief you got from the wife for those extra hours in the woods, whether or not you sat for a week, if you gave up a vacation day, etc. - it's not the method, but the hunt that counts.

For what it's worth, a good firend of mine, and a retired professional wrestler (no, I know it's not real - but those guys are actually really physically fit) did actually wrestle a live deer and break it's neck (although the deer was wounded). Seriously, I saw the pictures ... the deer was down and out - a shot through the neck. It was dark by the time they found it, and they were very close to their vehicle (a brand new van), so rather than field dress it right there, they decided to take it back to camp to gut it. Halfway down the road, still high-fivin' each otehr, with a celebratory beer already under their belts, they had a strange feeling that something was watching them. When the driver saw the deer standing up in the van, he swerved, and when he did the deer lost his balance. Well my buddy instictively jumped out of his seat and onto the body of the now fully alert (and extremely scared) deer.

The deer was kicking and trying to get up (couldn't get footing on the slick floor of the van) - my buddy freaked and started yelling "SHOOT HIM" to the driver. Well the driver knew he couldn't just blast away with someone entwined in a p.o.'d deer .... so my friend had no choice but to hold on ... he eventually broke the buck's neck.

I know you'll be skeptical and probably think this is the b/s post of the year, but it's true.

I heard this the first time I ever met the guy, but when his 14 year old son ran into the house and brought out the pictures ... well, let's just say I couldn't doubt him any further.
