to find the diameter of the tree just take one of those fabric tapemeasures and measure around the tree. But your problem probably is that when you hook the stnad onto the tree you have it level at the bottom of the tree. When you climb up the diameter of the tree decreases and therefore your stand is going to angel downward. Try angel the stand up at the bottom of the tree so that way when you climb up the stand levels out.
