Saturday I shot a boar with my bow. About 30 yards away. It was a perfect hit, low and just behind the shoulder. The arrow passed through both lungs and exited. After waiting about 45min. I went and retrieved my arrow. It was covered in blood, had a little lung tissue on it. The blood trail was a good one. I started tracking the guy and never found him. I tracted him for what seemed miles until the blood stoped. I have shot tuns of hogs before and never had one run after a good hit. This guy was hit with as good of a shot as I have ever made. He wasnt real big, about 150 to 200lbs. I cant figure this one out. I guess he is super hog.

Only thing I can add is from 30 yds it can be very easy to mis-read a good hit. I try never to trust what I see when my arrow hits - I have been wrong before[:'(]

I wholeheartedly agree with Rack.Dont trust what you are seeing,in the heat of battle.Last fall,i Arrowed a Brute of a Whitetail,right about Dusk.The light was fading very fast,and the 8 Pointer Posed,14 yard's,from my Treestands,along a field edge.I took the shot,and swore that i seen my White Fletching,hit him squarely in the base of the neck.I contact my hunting Buddy,who was along on the Adventure,and told him of my contact with the Buck.He and i both felt,that it would be best to go home,and get right on him First Light ,the next Morning.The next morning,we found him piled up,90 yard's from the stand,still along the edge of the same field,that i shot him on.He was shot squarely through both Lung's,perfectly in the crease.How can this Be????????I know what i saw?/?? Your eye's can sometimes fool you,especially in the Adrenlin Pumping Adventure of Hunting,and also being in a War Zone. When people tell me,"Ive seen it ,with my own eye's" im a little cautious . Eye's can and do,play tricks on you.

Or else ,you saw what you saw,but only took out one Lung.

What really surprised me was i shot one last tuesday morning, 46 yards right behind the shoulder and the thing DROPPED in his tracks. Not one step, just fell right over. Ive never seen one do that. Only thing i can think of on yours is that it might have been higher than you thought. We figured out later in the hunt to just bust through the shoulders and go straight through to the heart. Every pig we shot like that only went abou 40 yards. I know im going to get heat for purposly taking shoulder shots, especially on pigs, but it was the only thing working.

I think you are right, that is all I can think happened. It must have been high and nicked just one lung. This is the first hog I ever had run. I shoot a about 5 to 10 of them a year (we are infested). It keeps me in practice for deer. I just found it odd. Most of the time I hear the thump, and see my fletching pass through, then the hog runs a few feet and drops. It all went as stated except the little bugger ran, for ever. Ohh well, I guess the coyottes got to eat. I had plans for his hams, I guess ill have to shot another now.


As for the shoulder shot, Ill take it anytime with my pistols or rifle. I have always been a little reluctant to take one with my bows. I have seen a guy shot one at 50yards in the shoulder, the arrow didnt even penatrate. This guy also had his bow set low and was using cheap broad heads. He was getting over a shoulder injury and had his bow set on 45 or 50lbs. Cant remember.

we got some ferrel hogs here in washington down arond the wynooche river valley, think i'll try for some this spring with my bow.

Yea, the shoulder hits with a bow have to be withen 20. Plus, all of us are shootin 70 pounds with cut up front broadheads, so were not at a lack of penetration. 10-15 a year is a lot of pigs. I want to start huntin them alot more. I only get to go a couple times a year, but i think ive come across a couple good spots that i want to try.

Im lucky, if you want call it that. Where I live the hogs are a problem. I could shoot a couple a day if I wanted. My hunting land is infested with them. I can also drive less than a mile to shot the guys when ever I want. I have some friends who are farmers who love for me to come and get rid of some. I once set up on a hill and counted over 70 in a field one day. They have dug every thing up around these parts. I like to keep in practice, with my bows, by hunting them about once a week. I keep the meat I want and all the others I shoot I give to a man who donates the meat. This super hog is the first I have ever lost. I have missed them before, but never lost one I hit. Oh well, coyotes like pork.

you said you had a good blood trail, then the blood just stoped. I hate to think this way but maybe someone found your hog before you did. it sucks that you lost it, Iam sure you will get another one.
