Thought I might try bowhunting this year, but am a total newbie. Any suggestions on what would be needed as far as gear? What type of bow, arrows, etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated

You could get a million replies to this question. Your best bet is to visit a local proshop and ask someone that works there. They will be able to set you up with everything you should need to get started.

All you really need is a bow and arrows, but there are a thousand other items you may want. I recommend you find out who runs the best bow shop in your area and then spend a lot of time there. A really good shop will give you good recommendations and will then make sure any equipment you buy, fits you properly. This last item is extremely important.

my best advice is go to a pro shop. and shoot as many bows as you can. and find one that feels comfortable for you!! dont buy a bow because of the brand. there are not really any bad bows. and this depends on your price range. be pre-pared to spend some coin on extras like; sights, rests, quiver, and arrows. unless you find a pkg. deal. good luck!!
