I don't use cover scent. I used to but don't think it helps much. I have good luck trying to go the scent free route and wearing rubber boots, but I think cover scent is fine if that's what a person feels good doing.

I've thought about Cpt. Backstraps idea on the foreign scent. If you use fresh earth scent in a stand of pines then deer surely wouldnt be too used to it. Yes there is dirt there but the pine smell IMO is stronger than the dirt. Also if you spray your boots with the fresh earth spray the deer could come right up to you and get a whiff of the steps you use to go up and end up staring you in the eyes.

I don't believe in "cover scent"...let me explain. I think a deer has a powerful enough nose to smell the "cover scent" and the scent we are trying to cover. ie human odor. attacking it at the source by showering and proper care of hunting clothes, then playing the wind seem to be the sure fire ways to beat the whitetail nose. Hawgs Ltd Vanishing Hunter is also good at fighting human odor.

[8D] captain, I agree with you about mouth odor. Long time ago I learned to carry an apple or 2 with me when I'm afield. It tends to eliminate mouth odor extremely well. Just put a small ckunk in your mouth about every 15 minutes. It certainly has helped me over the years when I go to my stealth mode.

i never use cover scent because i agree with the theory that a deer can smell the cover scent and you at the same time because they have an extremely powerful sense of smell. I try to go scent free. I use carbon blast to kill my scent, but no matter what the scent killing product advertises, you can never be completely scent free. Your best bet is to get as scent free as you can and play the wind.

I'm a scent control freak. I do everything I can do--outside of getting one of the expensive suits--to be as scent-free as possible.
I shower with scent-free soap before each hunt, wash everything that goes out with me in scent-free detergent and baking soda, spray on scent elimination sprays, play the wind . . . the whole 9 yards.
I stopped using fox urine and other cover scents years ago. IMO, it's like having a cigarette stuck in the middle of a pizza--the pizza will not cover the scent and you'll still be able to smell the cigarette. I stopped using estrous urines too and it hasn't hurt my success.
