I have a question about what is a curtious distance to hunt from someone?
Here is the issue. My wife and I hunt on a public hunting ground in southern wisconsin, its our first year hunting here and we know that there are a couple of guys that have been hunting out there for quite a while, the problem is that because of the type of area it is, there is a limited amount of space. While we do not want to interfere with something getting into there areas we want the best oppurtunity to get a deer also.

It' s hard to say without knowing the lay of the land and the terrain, but I would start with talking with the people that have hunted it for quite some time. It' s only fair. Ask them where they hunt. Where they would like you to hunt. How you can set up and not interfere with them being up wind of them. My buddy and I have stands set up at least 300 yards from one another. This works out well.

Read the post about " killed my first deer..still need my first deer" . Try not to get yourself in that situiation. I remember hunting public land up north (MI) and when it got light on opening morning being able to count three or four other hunters in Blaze orange. Those orange hats make it look like you are sitting in a pumpkin patch.[:' (]. I sure don' t miss it. I hope you can find places where you feel comfortable and safe. You didn' t mention.. Are you talking about bow or gun hunting? Makes a big difference on room needed.

the distance ,well if it' s gun season i like to stay as far as possible from anyone not in my hunting party ,you basically know about the people you hunt with and how they are going to react, with bow and arrow it' s a little different , i would say just to play it safe give them a hundred yards , and if it' s public land ,it' s first come first serve so to speak.

In that area we do both bow and gun.
Also I would have a tendency to agree with the public land thing first come first serve. The only problem is(of course the guy wasn' t there) but I had actually stumbled across the area that he hunts and it really looked like he had been putting in some time in the area, developing shooting lanes and building up blind where he sits.
Thank you for your responses.

I guess I' m spoiled. Arizona has so much public land. I don' t feel comfortable if there' s someone else (besides my hunting partner), within a mile of us. This is spot-and-stalk hunting, however.
