RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!

I side w/ brian. it honestly sound like you had a heart hit! i.e. bright red blood, and the fact that you did not see any blood for a few yards. i shot a buck this year from the ground and i had a perfect heart shot. he went least 20 yards before i found blood! and yes i use muzzy blades. my shot went in and stopped up against the other shoulder!!! the deer did run about 120 -130 yards before he piled up! if you have gone onle 50 yards from impact site he probably is just a little farther ahead. if your neighbor has thick woods i' ll bet he is just over the property line in one of those thickets. take your time go blood spot too blood spot. do not get ahead of yourself and you will find your buck! congrats! get permission and get your deer! Good Luck! let us know how you do! i will be eagerly waiting to hear how you do. also my deer went about 50 yards never on a sprint at all either, but he went 50 yards and stopped and looked at the arrow and pretty much walked the rest of the way to his fall.

bigbuck00 - My guess is your arrow went either through one shoulder into the opposite or missed the front shoulder blade low and lodged in the opposite side. Your arrow was still in him .... so every step and move he makes those blades cut more and more. You killed this deer IMO ... but will you find him ? With the arrow in, even after he breaks it off, your blood trail will be slim. I' d give him as long as I could before trailing him. Theres the diaphram and lungs and of course the heart going well up into the chest cavity directly behind those shoulders ... sure hope you find him. Your shot could have been better ... but could have been worse too. In the event you hit even farther up if you missed the body cavity and just sliced through meaty shoulder... he might live.

I just got to say it. Your grasp of what happened really sucks. You really got to pay attention. If the arrow didn' t go through you should have seen it hit him, what angle and where. That said, it depends on " What vicinity" of the shoulder you hit. If it was square through or behind and through it could have stuck in the off shoulder. If it was angled forward bad and on the shoulder or just behind you haven' t done anything except make him mad with a hole between the shoulder and the chest wall..... but not in the vitals unless you got REAL lucky and took out the leg artery. The sound he made, the blood starting after he ran aways etc etc.. tells me he' s probably DEAD and close to where you left him. Unless of course you " Vicinity" shot was angled forward too much and not started far enough back. I' d say high hit, through the shoulder, into the lungs, nothing but table fare. You got to find him is all. I wish I were there to help you. Was it a loud CRACK when the arrow hit or just the thunk or twack. If you hit that shoulder bone you should have heard it loud and clear... unless you had your eyes and your ears shut.[:-][&:] Good luck. We' re cheering for you. I suspect you don' t have more than 100 yards to go.

RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!

I am sorry, and I truly do not relish banging on someone, but for the sake of those that are still learning the critical hunting skills, and using some of what they read in these posts for training material, it has to be said.

These days, it appears that there are just too many deer being shot and not recovered; almost an epidemic. It appears that the majority of the time the primary reason that the deer are not recovered, or its post-hit condition not reasonably determined, is that the tracking skills of too many shooters are horrendously lacking….in fact they (tracking skills) stink. Not only are the tracking skills lacking, too many shooters just cannot reasonably determine how lethal the hit was.

If after 10 years of bowhunting, a person is still is not sure what to do after hitting a deer, does not know how to evaluate the hit and possible lethality of the hit by the post-hit actions, and has not arranged ahead of time to obtain permission to follow a track into adjacent property before they stick a deer near the fence-line…or to determine they can' t enter the property, bowhunting is headed for big problems.

Bad shots can happen to anyone. There is no excuse for lack of tracking skills, not being prepared to track into as many areas that the deer might run, and not being able to reasonably determine what kind of hit appeared to have been made.

Maybe some people should carry a laptop and a PC cam with them into the field.

I' m in central IL, and if you need help tracking this animal.....I can be there in a couple of hours. Don' t let this deer go to the coyotes. I have been in your position and I can tell you this, be prepared to crawl on your hands and knees until morning if necessary and don' t give up.
That deer is dead from your actions and it is your responsibility to recover it.
Good luck!

Get ' er done!
