RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
You say you could see the arrow sticking in the deer? Well, where in the deer was it sticking? and how far did it penetrate?

RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
How far was the arrow sticking out of his body? If you saw the arrow where was it in the shoulder? How did the deer react when you hit him? need more info
|
RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
was his tail up or down?
|
RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
If you hit to far front, your in for a long track job and most likely no deer. However, if you clipped the lungs your penetration should be enough to put him down fairly quickly. You say you stopped tracking at the property line, could you see if the blood trail continued? or did it just stop at the property line? Any bubbles in the blood you found?

RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
was it more of a " thud" when you hit him? or a really loud crack like a gunshot?
|
RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
When the deer took off did he bolt out of there like a bat out of hell or just kind of troted off.
|
RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
If half the arrow penetrated, and you hit in the shoulder, that shot should be lethal. I' d say you more than likely got at least one lung. You should be able to follow the blood trail to him. I take it you didn' t hear a " crash" after you lost site of him?
Get a buddy, get permission from the neighbor and go get your buck. Follow that blood trail as far as it will take you. Don' t go stomping off the trail because you think you know where he is. Take your time, you' ll get him. Slice |

RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
I agree I think you got at least one lung, maybe both. Does any of the blood have bubbles in it?
|
RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
It sounds like you missed the first shoulder blade but the arrow possibly longed in the opposite one accounting for your lack of penetration. Sounds like it should be down not to much further from where you stopped. Stay persistent while tracking and best of luck. Lets see some pictures of this bad boy!
|
RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
Sounds like you got him. 15 inches of penetration is plenty. I' ll bet he' s another 50 yards from where you stopped. That sound is him breathing with a hole in his lungs, most likely, and you being so close to him is why you heard it so well.
|
RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
Take your time once you get in the thickets and stay off the trail. If its pretty thick keep looking around and ahead. If you see him bedded still alive back out quietly and give him time to expire. Don' t push him a 1 lung deer can go along way! Just take one other person with you. Good luck !!!! keep us posted!!!
|
RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
If the bright red blood was not pinkish and did not contain any bubble, then you may have missed the lungs altogether and just hit muscle in from of the lungs. It is really impossible at this point to guess from the info you gave us. Good luck tracking him and let us know what happens.
|
RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
I' d give him a good 5 hours before tracking. One good thing is that time is on your side. You' ll have some good daylight to track.

RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
If you have decent blood and a trail established, I think your chances of finding the buck are good. Now, you just have to ask permission to gain access to the other property to resume your tracking efforts. That should not be a problem. I bet you will find your buck in those thickets and in his bedding area. He probably bedded down and died.
Keep us posted. |
RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
From experience I can tell you if you hit bone solid it sounds just like you shot a 2X4, it will make a really loud almost CRACK! noise. When you say you hit it in the shoulder area was it right over the shoulder, slightly forward or slightly back? In regards to the blood if your hit was as high as you say the blood is going to be dripping after running down the deers shoulder since you didn' t get a pass through to allow a lower exit wound, you may still have hit a lung and the blood is not pink or frothy because it is running down the deers shoulder before dripping off. I agree with the others in waiting for a good while before tracking him. Even if he beds down and the bleeding stops, with the broad head still in him 15 inches he will reopen anything that quit bleeding with every step he takes. This deer in all likely hood is a goner with 15 inches of arrow and broadhead in his shoulder.

RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
I side w/ brian. it honestly sound like you had a heart hit! i.e. bright red blood, and the fact that you did not see any blood for a few yards. i shot a buck this year from the ground and i had a perfect heart shot. he went least 20 yards before i found blood! and yes i use muzzy blades. my shot went in and stopped up against the other shoulder!!! the deer did run about 120 -130 yards before he piled up! if you have gone onle 50 yards from impact site he probably is just a little farther ahead. if your neighbor has thick woods i' ll bet he is just over the property line in one of those thickets. take your time go blood spot too blood spot. do not get ahead of yourself and you will find your buck! congrats! get permission and get your deer! Good Luck! let us know how you do! i will be eagerly waiting to hear how you do. also my deer went about 50 yards never on a sprint at all either, but he went 50 yards and stopped and looked at the arrow and pretty much walked the rest of the way to his fall.

RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
Look hard. You should find him. You had to of hit a lung.
|
RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
Sounds like he' s down to me:) Good luck, you should find him in 100-200 yards. Keep us posted and get some pictures:D

RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
bigbuck00 - My guess is your arrow went either through one shoulder into the opposite or missed the front shoulder blade low and lodged in the opposite side. Your arrow was still in him .... so every step and move he makes those blades cut more and more. You killed this deer IMO ... but will you find him ? With the arrow in, even after he breaks it off, your blood trail will be slim. I' d give him as long as I could before trailing him. Theres the diaphram and lungs and of course the heart going well up into the chest cavity directly behind those shoulders ... sure hope you find him. Your shot could have been better ... but could have been worse too. In the event you hit even farther up if you missed the body cavity and just sliced through meaty shoulder... he might live.

RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
I just got to say it. Your grasp of what happened really sucks. You really got to pay attention. If the arrow didn' t go through you should have seen it hit him, what angle and where. That said, it depends on " What vicinity" of the shoulder you hit. If it was square through or behind and through it could have stuck in the off shoulder. If it was angled forward bad and on the shoulder or just behind you haven' t done anything except make him mad with a hole between the shoulder and the chest wall..... but not in the vitals unless you got REAL lucky and took out the leg artery. The sound he made, the blood starting after he ran aways etc etc.. tells me he' s probably DEAD and close to where you left him. Unless of course you " Vicinity" shot was angled forward too much and not started far enough back. I' d say high hit, through the shoulder, into the lungs, nothing but table fare. You got to find him is all. I wish I were there to help you. Was it a loud CRACK when the arrow hit or just the thunk or twack. If you hit that shoulder bone you should have heard it loud and clear... unless you had your eyes and your ears shut.[:-][&:] Good luck. We' re cheering for you. I suspect you don' t have more than 100 yards to go.

RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
I am sorry, and I truly do not relish banging on someone, but for the sake of those that are still learning the critical hunting skills, and using some of what they read in these posts for training material, it has to be said.
These days, it appears that there are just too many deer being shot and not recovered; almost an epidemic. It appears that the majority of the time the primary reason that the deer are not recovered, or its post-hit condition not reasonably determined, is that the tracking skills of too many shooters are horrendously lacking….in fact they (tracking skills) stink. Not only are the tracking skills lacking, too many shooters just cannot reasonably determine how lethal the hit was. If after 10 years of bowhunting, a person is still is not sure what to do after hitting a deer, does not know how to evaluate the hit and possible lethality of the hit by the post-hit actions, and has not arranged ahead of time to obtain permission to follow a track into adjacent property before they stick a deer near the fence-line…or to determine they can' t enter the property, bowhunting is headed for big problems. Bad shots can happen to anyone. There is no excuse for lack of tracking skills, not being prepared to track into as many areas that the deer might run, and not being able to reasonably determine what kind of hit appeared to have been made. Maybe some people should carry a laptop and a PC cam with them into the field. |
RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
I' m in central IL, and if you need help tracking this animal.....I can be there in a couple of hours. Don' t let this deer go to the coyotes. I have been in your position and I can tell you this, be prepared to crawl on your hands and knees until morning if necessary and don' t give up.
That deer is dead from your actions and it is your responsibility to recover it. Good luck! Get ' er done! |

good luck on finding the buck.

RE: Need help..Just stuck a MONSTER!!!
Bigbuck00
Since you and your uncle did not find him, you still may have a chance. Get several of your friends and go out there and spreadout about 30 yards and walk the place like a deer drive. Doing a grid search at a time. 12 eyes are better than 4. We have found deer this way after the blood has stopped. If the deer is wounded you may see him and may get another shot. You shot a trophy some of us down here in the south dream about.....don' t give up. |
