I' ve heard grunt screams before and grunt belches before but not coughs....yet
Saw a 10-12 pointer on Thursday...35 yards from my stand in heavy brush and bramble...he followed 3 does up a ravine....let out 2 very loud grunt belches...sniffed the ground where the does were...smelled that they were not ready...and moved along.

On a somewhat related incident, i once shot a buck with both eyes swole shut. At the time i thought he had been fighting, but on second thought he may have had bad allergies. Just kidding, he was badly battle marked aroung the face and ears.

Thanks for all the input. The one reply about the weezing when an inferior buck is around makes sense because there was another nice buck that was there too, before this big buck came over. Thanks again for the input. I went out again tonight, but I live in central illinois and it was 75 degrees and windy, so I only saw one small doe.
It is suppose to cool off wednesday so hopefully I will bag this big boy!! Thanks again!

Get the True Talker video. It shows bucks making a grunt that sounds like a long drawn out rumbling burp. I can make a similar sound, but not every time. I wish it showed a doe or fawn bleating, so that I could pratice on the grunt tube while listening to the real thing.

Yep, it is called " snort wheezing" . It is a sound made by dominant bucks to let everyone know that they are comming. It is a rare sound to hear, but it can be incredibly effective.
I used the " M.A.D. Grunt Snort Wheeze" call a few years ago. I had a nice 7 point come in, and I missed him. I finally got made and just did a loud grunt, then I did the " snort wheeze" . A minute or so later a BRUISER buck (143-3/8" non-typical 12 point) came down off a hill of brush. He was TICKED OFF!!!!!! He came down grunting the whole time, he was stomping his feet and rubbing anything and everything that got in his way. His hair was standing up and his ears were laid back. He meant business.
If you have a dominant buck in the close area that you are hunting and the time is right, the snort wheeze is your best bet at bagging him.
Larry Weishuhn (or however you spell it) uses the snort wheeze while rattling in Texas and I have a Realtree Monster bucks video where he brings in a big buck with that call.

I was tipped of to the deer behind me this year by a doe that was coughing--she sounded just like a person coughing. I heard that sound repeated several times that evening and many times in the other evenings when deer were in the field--I think she the likely culprit each time.

I' ve heard lots of deer sneeze. Usually does but have heard bucks do it as well. Easiest way to understand it is that just like humans, sometimes they get things caught in their nose and have to get it out. Theres really nothing that unusual about it.
Cape a mature deer and cut off their noses sometime......you' ll be amazed at what you' ll see and even wonder how some of them breath at all!
You' ll know when you hear a snort wheeze.....just hope your holding onto your stand when you do.......might fall out if your not!

This bow season I watched a big doe choke on Beech nut. She was gagging for about a minute and she finally got it out and then she stopped 7 yards in front of me. Needless to say she didnn' t cough up anything after that.

I’ve heard that sound before.
I’ve also heard them “roar”. The instance in which this occurred is an atrocity, but it boiled down to a rifle wounded buck that had it’s hind quarters broken as well as it’s shoulders..it was dragging itself along the ground and making a grunt like tone with extreme volume and duration. Like a Lions roar. The inexperienced hunter who had wounded the animal had run out of ammo, and every time I approached to try and cut the poor creature’ throat to put it out of it’s misery, it would make this roaring sound and try to get up or crawl away.[:' (] I can assure you I almost crapped myself the first time I heard that. Eventually the deer became too weak to move even his head and I finished the job with my knife.
Disgusting situation, and I damn near quit hunting because of it. I won’t ever forget the sound. [:' (] I certainly hope that “hunter” never entered the woods again.[:@] He did not seem remorseful whatsoever.[:@][:@]
