Last year my buddy said he heard a big buck make a sound like he was sick or something and was clearing his throat. It is hard to explain, it wasn' t a grunt or a snort. I have heard bucks grunting and snorting, but last night I heard for the first time a buck sound like he was clearing his throat. It was a very big mature buck. Is this something that mature bucks do?? It is hard to explain but he was a big, border line trophy buck. He came in after some does. Didn' t chase them, just came in to investigate. I was hoping the does would lead him into me, but he stayed about 60 yards away. Shotgun season he would of been toast.
Also, since he wouldn' t come in, should I have grunted at him when he is that close and the does are 40 yards away?? Would it have spooked him and the does or made him curious enough to come in??? Any insight into this noise would be greatly appreciated.

I had a friend on mine I was hunting with just last weekend say the same thing. A nice eight pointer came in to check some does and he swears the deer coughed. He said it was loud too. Musta been smoker' s cough because my buddy smoked him with the broadhead seconds later.

I recall when reading an article on CWD about deer coughing. Had to do with a form of worms that caused a lung parasite. Apparently, the deer, elk, etc, will cough when trying to dislodge the parasites from the lungs.

I' ll throw another one into the works. Some years back my hunting buddy reported hearing a deer belch. I accussed him of going off the deep end with his stories but he insisted it was true. The next day about 1/2 mile away I had the same thing happen to me and it was very loud expecially when compared to the normal grunts we are use to hearing. I responded with my grunt call and copied has belch as best as possible. I got a couple more belches out of hime and he eventually circled me to a point where I could see him. He was a real nice tall racked buck. I hated to repeat the story because it gave some validity to my buddies story.

Sometimes domaint bucks make a call called a snort adn weeze. It kind of sounds like a sneeze. THe call is used to tell other bucks that he is the domaint buck of the area, and that basically he is a hard ass and will fight for the domaint spot

this 4-pointer actually sneezed, like a person, totally different from a snort wheeze, bucks generally only snort wheeze when other inferior deer are around, the deer i saw was by itself and needed a kleenex
