I had a doe come real close to me on many occasions a few years back that coughed the entire time she was in the area. The other deer treated her as an outcast. As a result none of them would come near me when she was around. Were they afraid to get " sick" too? Or were they afraid she was making too much damn noise? In any event it was clearly a cough and a deer that was sick. I didn' t shoot her because of fear myslef. However, I should have just to put her down.

I have seen and heard deer cough before, it is a very unmistakealbe sound, and yes it does sound just like a person coughing. It dosent sound anything like a grunt or a snort wheeze.
I was watching a doe waiting for a shot at her last year and her vitals were covered by a tree when I saw and heard her cough. I was just amazed by the fact it sounded just like human cough[
]
I also watched and heard a small button buck cough this year.
Ya ought to hear the sound they make when they run into a tree at a full run[&:]

I’ve heard that sound before.
I’ve also heard them “roar”. The instance in which this occurred is an atrocity, but it boiled down to a rifle wounded buck that had it’s hind quarters broken as well as it’s shoulders..it was dragging itself along the ground and making a grunt like tone with extreme volume and duration. Like a Lions roar. The inexperienced hunter who had wounded the animal had run out of ammo, and every time I approached to try and cut the poor creature’ throat to put it out of it’s misery, it would make this roaring sound and try to get up or crawl away.[:' (] I can assure you I almost crapped myself the first time I heard that. Eventually the deer became too weak to move even his head and I finished the job with my knife.
Disgusting situation, and I damn near quit hunting because of it. I won’t ever forget the sound. [:' (] I certainly hope that “hunter” never entered the woods again.[:@] He did not seem remorseful whatsoever.[:@][:@]
