I have not seen that many deer yet this year. So now i am not sure if it is the coffee or if it just is bad timing. I am looking for suggestions about what to drink to replace the coffee and to spare me the head ache from not having any until i get down from the stand. If it was not for the head ache i get without it i would have no problem skipping it.

Is the hot chocolate a superstition or are you really serious. Maybe it just seems that way
I' m not superstitious but after not seeing many deer and reading somewhere the smells that spook, and the ones that don' t, I made the decission not to drink coffee. The smell of the chocolate may even attract them. TR.Michaels would probably know better than me. As far as your headaches, thats cause your hooked on caffeine. My wife gets them if I give her decaf tea instead of regular tea.

If your lookin for a warm tasty drink on stand that may attract deer rather than scaring them away, Try some warm Apple Cider. Just a thought.

Maybe the deer enjoy a cigarette and a cup now and then.[8D] Twenty five years ago I used to smoke in my stand and saw plenty of deer.[>:] Course it seemed like everybody smoked back then. You could smoke on planes, at work, while shopping, just about everywhere. Don' t smoke no more, don' t hardly drink anymore, shoot, don' t even cuss anymore. Sometimes I gotta pinch myslef to see if I' m still alive.[X(]

I drink coffee on stand when its real cold. Helps keep me thaw. Honestly, I am beginning to think that way too much it being made out of deer smelling you. Deer encounter different smells in the woods all the time. One year, I could smell the wood stove from our camp, at least 1/2 mile away. The deer smell it to. I think that human scent, stronger whiffs of it spook deer. If your scent is minimal, coffee isn' t going to spook them. I also feel that if a deer know somethings up, they will begin trying to smell you and if they catch a whiff of you, game over, they will leave the area.

Yes they do but deer aren' t alarmed by the smell of wood smoke. Thats a natural smell. Forests have been burning down since the beggining of time. Its the man made smells that spook deer.Maybe you never witnessed a deer with its nose to the ground and run into the spot where you crossed its trail. If you have than you would know it deffinately smelled where you walked, unless you' ve taken appropriate measures so as to cover-up, hide or not leave any human scent on the ground.

Hehehe....I have always preferred to hunt mornings rather than evening whenever possible. I don' t relish the idea of stumbling around in my woods at night chasing down deer with a flashlight. I also don' t care for gutting deer in the dark.

All that said, I don' t drink coffee or anything else in the morning before hunting. It' s not that I' m concerned about the smell of the coffee....I' m just concerned about the smell of the urine at the bottom of my tree!

I always have a thermos of coffee with me. I drink as much as I can carry. If the thermos was bigger, I' d have a cup going all the time. Yes, I' ve shot deer when the cup is out and some in it

I agree with Doemasters--its all wind...

Last year my dad was drinking coffee--had a blanket wrapped around his legs with a little heater going in his stand--and still got deer to walk under his stand...
