Default Turkeys 2, Deer 0

Ok, I went hunting today and this morning was perfect. It has been overcast all night, there was a breeze and even a very light rain. The deer were out in force and the rain was helping mask sounds alot. My shooting lanes were full of deer this morning as the sun came up. I have 2 lanes out of my blind that give me targets from 10-30 yards. I had a great doe at 18 yards and decided to take her. One problem. I changed my pull from 60lbs to 70lbs last week to flatten out my shots and had not practiced pulling 70lbs from a seated position. What a rude awakening. I made so much noise and movement to get the bow pulled that I scared off my target and even the other doe at 10 yards. All that were left were the 2 does at 30 yards. By the time I laid the site on them, my arm was shaking like a leaf. Of course, I missed. She bolted off like she got hit, but later i found my arrow about 70 yards down the lane. While waiting for another shot, I started stretching my shoulders and trying to get into the best position to pull for another shot. Another nice doe came along and was hanging out at about 13 yards. She was just begging to be taken. (i think she even had a sign) I managed to pull back with a little less theatrics and took careful aim. I loosed my arrow. Missed her! She bolted about 30 yards and I was hoping she would come back, but she never did. I found this arrow about 60 yards down the lane. I must have been aiming high. I just didn' t understand it. I shot the bow after the pull was changed and was getting better groups than ever. And now this. UGH

So I am sitting there pretty dejected and a whole bunch of toms run down and start munching my corn. They were pretty good sized and so I figured what the heck. So once again I drew. (after noticing that I was alarmingly short on arrows) I took careful aim and got him at 10 yards! He startting flopping about like mad and then settled in about 20 yards away. I waited a bit before getting out of the stand just in case another deer might walk by. Then I went and looked at him. As I walked up, I noticed my arrow was laying beside him and wondered why it had not just gone through him. I found my answer when I went to pick up my arrow. It was attatched to his head! My broadhead had hit the tom right in the side of the head. The impact cause the head to move enough so that it did not come out the other side. So while the tom was flopping about, he was scrambling his own brain. I could not get the head out so I uncrewed the arrow and took the tom back to the truck. He was pretty hefty for a Rio Grande turkey. (20-22 lbs) I had it breasted out and came about with about 3lbs of breast meat. His beard was 8" long and his colors were great. As fun as it was to bag him. I am still very frustrated that I missed my deer at 13 yards! I am convinced that I must have been shooting high. That tom' s head was a good foot or more above where I was aiming.

Luckily, My new Mathews LX should be in by the end of the week and I don' t ever have to shoot my borrowed bow again.

Shooting someone elses bow is like laying with someone elses woman... The motions are similar, but it' s just not the same.
